ITV has confirmed that it has gained the rights to show the matches for England’s women team.

I assume The NFL Show is prerecorded rather than live as Dan wouldn't be able to do both shows on the same day.

Good news but as far as I am aware BBC have Women's Euros and World Cup Finals Tournaments exclusively, could we see ITV coming on board with them in the future like the men's tournaments?

Great to see ITV get involved with women's football. In these days it was a bit glaring to see the lack of women's sport (compared with the amount of men's sport) shown across the ITV network so it is a psoitive development to see them acquire a top level contract. I see the article above says coverage will be on itv and itv4 - hopefully it won't be a case of the majority of matches hidden away on itv4 with little effort; if a second string men's team can play against Andorra on a weekend afternoon on the main channel there should be no reason why a full strength women's team can play against a better opponent on the same channel in a similar timeslot (when not much else is shown).

Could be a possibilty when coverage is expanded in the next few years to the level of the men's tournaments. If I remember from 2019 and 2015 World Cups, the BBC only showed around one match a day on BBC One/Two/Three/Four with the rest on the Red Button/iPlayer with only world feed commentary so it didn't eat into the schedules or be as resource hungry as how the men's tournament covered. From 2023 the Women's World Cup will increase to 32 teams, so that alongside the inevtiablity that women's football will increase in popularity and thus coverage it wouldn't be surprising if ITV did get involved too. Worth noting that Euro 2017 probably had the most extensive terrestrial coverage in the UK of any women's finals with most matches either on Channel 4 or More4.

This Week is usually recorded on a Tuesday afternoon, and I think they record bits for the NFL show on the same day.

I think with the loss of the French Open ITV's only womens sport would have been the Rugby World Cup every 4 years. Probably a bigger loss to the BBC than it is a win for ITV though. As for the tournaments - nowadays with streaming an option beyond the linear channels splitting them is surely more for the benefit of reducing costs than not being able to show all matches so unless they got to the level where costs become prohibitive for the BBC I doubt they'd want to split them with ITV, especially having now lost the qualifiers.

First England women's match on ITV will be v. North Macedonia on itv4 on Friday September 16th per tonight's highlights show.

The only other women's sport ITV had the rights to do I can think of as of this morning was open events where there are some women like horse racing. I wouldn't say it's much of a loss for the BBC though as they have plenty of other football rights and women's sport to show. ITV on the other hand are a little barer when it comes to a football portfolio.

I wonder what personnel will ITV use? Seema Jaswal and Celina Hinchliffe are women who are currently used on ITV Sport coverage. This weekend has highlighted to an extent that the pool of female pundits used is a little small with many of the names appearing on Sky's coverage also appearing on BBC and BT Sport coverage frequently over recent years.



The Women's Football Show is still only 35 minutes long, with some of the later matches having a bit of a rushed effort with only the goals shown. Those edits now have a reporter rounding up the action rather than the FA Player commentary.

New titles and new theme, with a purple/pink and yellow version of the new BBC Sport football used. Jonathan Pearce doing what seems a bespoke commentary for the BBC on Arsenal v. Chelsea which is a new development. Last season's show usually used the BT Sport commentary or the FA Player commentary and on occasion the world feed, but it looks like the show is getting a similar treatment to pre 2004 MOTD with the BBC having their own comms to some matches.

The 2023 women’s World Cup is in Australia and New Zealand so I am not sure ITV will be that keen on a tournament where matches are either overnight or in the morning.

I’ve noticed that ITV say the Men’s deal runs out next year ? Could they end up back on Sky or on Amazon after next year.

It was mentioned a while back that ITV might be getting the rights to the Women's FA Cup, but they haven't, I wonder if someone got confused. It's sad for the Beeb to lose them because they've had a very long relationship with England, they've shown them live for well over a decade, but as illustrated this weekend, they have plenty of other women's football and, with the expanded Super League rights and the FA Cup, they will probably have a live match most weeks of the season. I think it can only be good for the women's game that the BBC, ITV and Sky will now all be showing it on a regular basis.

I don't know when ITV have said this, but it's worth pointing out ITV's England rights these days in terms of those from the FA only actually involve pre-tournament friendlies, with the qualifiers (and friendlies played on days used by other nations for qualifiers) being sold by UEFA, where ITV are working with Sky. I don't see any other broadcaster that interested in them, though, there aren't enough to get subscriptions out of and you also have to offset any benefit you get from the barrage of criticism you'd get from taking them off FTA TV.

I wonder if the BBC would try get the England rights back then if this is the case. While ITV have done a good job i always thought they worked better on the BBC and it possible the BBC would happy letting Sky either simulcast or show some England matches exclusively live with Extended Highlights on the BBC later the same evening with full re run overnight. Channel 5 would be the only other channel I could see been interested if they wanted to get back in to football without the hassle of having to do weekly highlights shows. So I think the interest in England rights will be there but unless ITV are getting poor ratings and advertising sales for the coverage I would expect them to try keep the rights.

Sadly we have previously seen the BBC do deals with Sky which result in less content on free to air TV but I think they've more than enough football at the moment. The likely outcome is the status quo remains - Sky aren't exactly breaking the bank to win exclusivity anymore either. The bigger threat is if a streamer takes an interest.

if someone like Amazon did go for them they would likely still be a highlights package which could suit the BBC. I think if the price was right the BBC would go for England rights especially since they struggling to have many ratings hits in primetime and have lost the England Women’s matches but it agree it most likely will remain with ITV.

I very much doubt the BBC have any appetite to aggressively go for England’s men’s games outside of World Cup and Euros. They’ve already got loads of football including live matches and highlights, so they’re already serving that audience. And if they’re paying for the England football rights that’s less in the pot for things like Cricket, Rugby and the Olympics. It would just leave other holes.

I do also sense the BBC/ITV relationship when it comes to sports rights is probably also moving to one to be more mutually beneficial. With them tending to work together more rather than bidding against each other. In the Six Nations, the BBC has shown they’re more than happy to let ITV have the commercially valuable England home rights, whilst the BBC for political reasons prefers to prioritise Scotland and Wales games. So trying to outbid ITV for these football rights doesn’t seem like a route they’d be desperate to go down.

I actually think a BBC/ITV bid for the Qualifiers is more of an outside bet, than the Beeb going for the England games. Leaving ITV the England games and the BBC the other nations games. They’d probably need to offload the rest to another broadcaster though.

Struggling to think really of the last time the BBC or ITV "won" the rights to an event where the other was the incumbent broadcaster and not voluntarily withdrawing other than the womens football this week.
