Despite uncertainty of whether it will take place, where it will take place and which players may not take part, the TV rights for the African Cup of Nations have been announced. Every match will be shown on Sky Sports (bet nobody saw that coming) with ten games (including the final and both semis) also shown on the BBC.
BBC also have digital clips (a la cricket) but no mention what format the BBC live games will be - presumably Red Button and iPlayer up until the semis then the final stages on BBC Four or BBC Two possibly? Also probably no involvment from long term AFCON broadcasters Eurosport, which would be sad purely for the randomness of that being almost their only football.

Sky Sports is a big surprise, not so much BBC getting some rights, says on the BBC report they will show 2 quarters as well so only 5 group matches to be shown.
Did Eurosport always have it when it was on BBC Three, ITV4 etc in the past?
I think so. Makes sense the BBC concentrating on knock out games - not much value in the group games really in comparison. I guess with there being 52 games there is also a round of 16 as well so it may be even just the one group game if they have half of those as well.
In addition to the increasing postponments in the world of football, COVID is starting to have an impact across other sports. Rugby union has seen one match each cancelled from the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup respectively. Saracens v. Pau was cancelled in the Challenge Cup (Saracens "losing" 28-0) and now Montpellier v. Leinster also a victim of Leintser's apparent COVID situation, despite the want of Leinster to play on.

In the bigger picture, with new stronger restrictions on those entering France the rest of this weekend's fixtures could be in danger.
Yes - off topic but never agreed with them awarding a bonus point victory in rugby. A draw would be fairest and encourage clubs to put public health first but I get the argument to declare the team who cancels the game the loss, but it should be a nominal loss - 7-0 would probably be fair, and 1-0 if applied in football (usually it's 3-0 for an abandoned game but I don't think that has been applied due to covid).
In the NFL, if a team has to forfeit, the result is 2-0. Oddly.
It’s the lowest possible winning score in a gridiron football game. (Involving a safety for the winning team). There’s no bonus points in the NFL and points difference, while potentially a possibility, is way down the list of tie breakers, so it doesn’t really matter what the score is.
I wonder if BT will regret buying the rights to the Ashes because England’s performance is not exacting going to bring viewers in and they have the cost of providing commentary during the times Michael Vaughan is on air on Fox Sports.

You can't exactly control the outcome of the match - either by buying the rights or watching it...
I've not caught much of the coverage so far. How are they covering up Vaughan? If it's with their own pundits it'll be the ones who are there for the pre- and post-match anyway, so not exactly adding any additional overheads.

Vaughan hasn't been on air yet as he had Covid so has missed the 1st and 2nd tests presumably having to isolate before hand therefore so far BT have just taken the Fox feed interjecting during intervals like Lunch, Tea etc just like Channel 4 did earlier this year.
It is reported David Gower will be flown out to the ground to commentate when Vaughan is on air on Fox Sports whether that is with pundits from BT Sport studios in London or if they will use people from Channel 7/Fox alongside Gower will be seen from next week.

If broadcasters only went for rights where they thought a home nations teams were certain to win, there wouldn’t be much international sport on TV. Anyway most of the fans will subscribe before a competition starts rather than waiting to see if England are doing any good.
As for the commentary situation, although the cost of commentary would have been factored into things when buying the rights, those costs will no doubt be insignificant compared to the rights costs.
All Heineken Cup and European Challenge Cup fixtures between U.K. and French clubs now postponed. Leinster, who were not allowed to postpone their game because, at that point, there was apparently absolutely no room in the calander for postponements, will be naturally furious. So will BT Sport, who now have a huge amount of hours in their weekend schedule to fill. The FTA game, Harlequins v Cardiff, is one of the few fixtures still in the schedule.

I don't think anybody buys the rights to England playing in Australia in the expectation of a good England performance. I think victories down under over the last 40 years are few and far between.
