To add to my last post about the Scottish Cup, Rangers game on Sunday and Celtic on Monday

Bellator MMA 275 currently on BBC 3.

Strange placement of the DOG - appears to be in 4:3 safe area. Assuming they expected a US logo in it's usual position.

Also appears to be a straight rebroadcast of the US feed, although they did welcome BBC 3 viewers. Guessing UK based events would have BBC Sport personnel there as well.

I think the cancellation of the F1 GP was going to be apparent when the Russian flag was being removed from the F1 app the night before it was officially called off.

I would also assume from a broadcasting pov; Channel 4's coverage of the Russian GP won't be broadcast from the Red Bull F1 Factory in Milton Keynes this year.

With a lot of people being vaccinated against Covid over the past while; would there still be a need for Channel 4 to broadcast any part their F1 race highlights programmes from F1 factories based in the UK this year if new variants of Covid are still cropping up throughout the rest of the world. There is a still a very big concentration of Covid being felt in some parts of Asia at this point.

I'm also not sure if countries visa entry rules on Covid are getting back to some normality for this year.

And some admin, the Europa League and Europa Conference League Round of 16 draws were conducted earlier. Presumably Leicester and West Ham will have seperate kick-offs, with Rangers the other British side still remaining.

Weren't they back to mainly hosting from the tracks last year within the F1 bubble? It was 2020 they were hosting from UK locations.

Russia has comitted the major crime of breaking the Olympic Truce, which is the major red line of the IOC apparently. The synic inside me thinks that if this happened in, say, September the IOC wouldn't be as angry about it.


FIFA now have a major headache that Poland will refuse to play Russia in World Cup Qualifying Play-Off next month.

Finances. The IOC contracts for all games mean they not able to cancel without paying heavy compensation to the host city while also refunding broadcasting and sponsorship money.

Be interesting to see what happens now Poland has refused to play Russia. What I can see happening is FIFA does rightly attempt to expel Russia but they go to CAS and win an appeal on some technicality (Possibly linked to lack of an UN motion condemning Russia)


For the Woman’s Euro’s Portugal lost to Russia in a play off so should be the first choice replacement.

It's an odd concept when you think about it - fine to invade who you like at any other point in the Olympic cycle, but don't disrupt our games. Again feels the concept of the Olympic Truce is to protect commercial interests around the stagimg of the games rather than to promote peace.

It will be interesting to see what impact this has on the Paralympics - in any other country you'd expect multiple signs of support for Ukraine, but in China I'm not so sure athletes will feel as free to express such views.

I suspect the IPC will come under massive pressure this week to ban Russia from competing or other counties will withdraw. Could be a very bumpy buildup as the BBC are reporting the IPC believe they have no legal basis to do so and any attempt would be overturned at CAS. Decisions by CAS could have a big effect on sporting events in the months to come.

Although of course technically Russia are already banned. Unlike the Olympics losing an athlete or too can seriously impact an event when some classifications only have 3-4 athletes competing. Ukraine though are one of the most successful Paralympic nations and if they were to withdraw that would be just as big a loss.

Bringing it back to broadcasting and C4 usually cut the news in half for highlights at 7.30. Not sure if that is the plan this time but suspect at the moment the news would rather keep the full hour.

We could go on a whole tangent about sudden changes to the F1 2022 championship; One team may have to drop its main sponsor, which puts those jobs at risk. What will be interesting to see is if they replace Russia with another race or not. . I would imagine Channel 4 would plug a gap with a film in its place.

How it affects TV scheduling in September is the least of anyones concerns now, but I'd be very surprised if F1 didn't have another race track step in. What will be interesting is the long term implications for sport which has repeatedly justified going to countries with questionable records under the guise of expanding the global reach of the event - although of course it's reaching those oil rich countries which seems to be a priority.

It's not really had much coverage beyond the golf pages over the last couple of weeks but there has been a huge outcry within the sport over a Saudi financed plan for a breakaway "Super league" tour, which had a couple of big names supposedly attached to it who have quickly had to make an about turn. In the shorter turn almost all sports with stops in Russia in the short term have pulled out - but suspect for many it's as much about logistics as it is the politics. Neither the ATP or WTA have made a call yet on October's Kremlin Cup but I don't think they'll be able to leave it much longer.


Longer term we may be looking at something similar to what happened to South Africa in the 70s and 80s for as long as Putin remains in charge of Russia, but as someone pointed out nowadays it's not quite as straight forward as just banning a country competing and the CAS may not do the situation any favours. There is also the issue of individuals, such as Medvedev on the ATP Tour who has just become the first world no. 1 other than Federer/Nadal/Djokovic/Murray for 19 years and the main breakthrough talent of the net generation, in a sport where it's really more about individual personalities than nationalities.

There's been suggestions/heavy rumours that the Turkish Grand Prix will replace the Russian Grand Prix.
