As for the 'inevitable' technical issues, yes, one could allow for a few technical glitches (and other broadcasters/news channels are certainly not immune where these are concerned) but the level of basic mistakes and technical glitches is beyond parody.

here's the manual). Hardware in the studio. There are two slots, maybe more, on the monitor stack. You receive an invite much like a Zoom meeting. Their site lists Sky, ITN, france.tv, Bloomberg, RAI, CBS and others as customers.
With DTLs by the public, there's always a possibility the person you're interviewing has terrible/congested broadband, and you can't have nearly as big a buffer as YouTube, for example, otherwise you introduce a huge delay. It
might also be other broadcasts are a bit more cautious about who they put on.
I do wonder what the rationale is for having this very asymmetrical split screen design, where you always end up with a large area of the right hand side of the screen left blank with everything pushed (at a really rather small size if there's a few people involved in the interview at once) to the leftmost two-thirds. Just looks 'off' to me, as if there should be something else filling that space on the right that isn't displaying properly.

I assumed they intended to have a graphics panel in the right-hand space that hasn’t materialised for obvious reasons.

I don't think that split screens works too well when there's a studio and DTL guest at the same time. A screen showing the DTL guest between the 2 sofas would work better on a wide 2 way shot but judging by the fact they're struggling with the basics adding a studio screen might create more problems!
Someone mentioned a while back the regional news segments on the old ITV News Channel, and I do remember that.
ITV News Network was the name of the programme. It used to be anchored by Steve Scott, usually not in the main ITV News Studio but in the ITV London Tonight studio at ITN. This was down to the fact the programme aired at 9.30pm, part of the one hour period when the news channel was kicked out of Studio 2 at ITN, for the then News at 10.30 to rehearse.
It was a half hour programme on weekdays, showing news items from the ITV regions.
I think Brekkie was alluding more to the UK Today slot on the ITV News Channel (3.20pm weekdays, and also a late evening slot) where they would cross live to regional presenters to talk about stories on the running order for their main ITV1 bulletins.

Didn't (as it was then) News 24 have 'News 24 Tonight' which covered stories from the regions?
The studio mics were just live throughout the weather.
