It's an "and finally" based feature on a not-really news channel. Not quite the same as silly season stories on BBC News.

I find it hard to believe they have that many journalists. How many regional reporters have we seen? 8-10? Presumably they are working solo and there hasn't been that many stories covered on GB News to make it look like they have another 100 people researching stories, getting guests etc

140 divided by 7 days a week is 20 a day. 20 divided by 18 broadcast hours each day is 1.1 journalist per hour broadcast on the channel.
(Of course, if you do the same maths for the 20 production staff, you start to realise where the problem with the technical aspects come from...)
This implies each journalist is working one hour a week, unless I’m misunderstanding your point? 126 hours a week, 140 journalists working 40 hours a week would mean there’s on average 44 journalists working any given hour they’re on air.
I don’t believe that for a minute, the output we’re all seeing would imply a very small number indeed.
Laurence clearly doesn’t watch GB News if he thinks they do reports.
Paul Marshall, the investor in GB News, himself was the one who said there would be 140 staff, that would include 120 journalists in December last year.
If the financial backers of this channel really had a business plan that believed it was possible to run a channel like this with just 20 staff for everything else, then it would suggest that they had no idea what it takes to run such a channel well, which would explain an awful lot.
At the moment GB News has one good hour with Neil, and it's like the other 23 hours is just filler until 8pm.
Putting political opinion aside, I really think they could make GB News work. It's disappointing how many technical issues the show has had, of course, a new channel will have mistakes but you're lucky to get through one hour without one. They could be doing this for ratings (as this forum has discussed) but I doubt Neil would want to be associated with trash TV.
I know they spent big with many of their presenters, but I do find some of the choices odd. Getting big names is important, but getting big names for the sake of having a big name is silly. Simon Mccoy is a great presenter but seems an odd choice for a channel like GB News, even more, odd to pair him with a Brexit party MEP (Simon just seems annoyed by her).

Just for now do whatever they need to do, have big backup microphones for every interview (like they used with Rishi). Its better to have a slightly silly-looking microphone laying about (most people won't notice). However, sound issues, not hearing people and rubbish quality is what the general public will notice and just turn off.
It must be slightly embarrassing for a broadcaster like Discovery to be associated with a channel with so many mistakes. Having what looked like senior management oversee the show seems essential for at a few months. Even if they can only afford 1 or 2 of them, I think they just need someone overseeing every show at the moment on a rota.

GB News falling for pranksters is partly due a relative lack of audience, but the evident lack of editorial control and experienced producers is going to be potentially very costly if they fall for hoax stories from the public.

I'm guessing it wouldn't be uncommon for any news channel to have at least 20 technical/production staff on site at anyone time - so for a channel operating 18 hours a day you'd probably need four times that number. And of course any reputable news organisation probably would have 20 or so journalists out in the field at any one time newsgathering, each accompanied by at least one technical or production staff member.
I think ultimately what GB News is showing is why so few have tried before to enter the 24 hour news channel market in the UK. It's not easy and it's certainly not cheap.
They're currently captioning Newcastle as 'Newscastle'.
