It doesn't surprise me considering most of the elements that make up full scale Oscars special are not possible due to the pandemic.. Coverage generally (even in the States) has been far less elaborate than other years.

Well, indeed, and when they covered the Oscars last year, it was when they did the whole show live from LA and devoted about 95% of the show to it, despite the fact there was severe weather affecting most of the UK and Covid was becoming a big thing, both of which they pretty much ignored. That seemed to get a very poor reaction, and it was one of the lowest-rated editions of the entire year, so you would think that, even if the Oscars had taken place as usual this year, they might have eased off on the coverage because it was clear the audience aren't that interested. Certainly not to make it more than, as mentioned, just another story.
Yes, low key coverage of a low key Oscars. Seems fairly reasonable to me. Plus in previous years, GMB has gone way over the top with its coverage. It all seemed a bit more in proportion today.

Just because They were filming in London and not in LA doesn't mean that they couldn't dedicate most of the show to the Oscars.
Then again, I watched some of the Oscars last night and it didn't seem as interesting as previous years and for some reason it lacked energy and it didn't seem as interesting as previous years, so I think it's best that GMB didn't touch on it as much as they did in previous years

Well, they could, but they did that last year and it seemed like nobody was interested. On Breakfast it was about fourth in the running order, which is probably about right. Especially in the current climate, there's simply not enough interest to devote the majority of the show to it.
The Oscars coverage was always over indulgent so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't bother sending the presenters out there anymore.
I personally couldn't care less about The Oscars and wouldn't be disappointed if they didn't mention it at all, but I understand that many others will take an interest in it and so GMB should try and find a good balance.
I'd say it would be a reasonable happy medium to cover the event, but reserve coverage for Richard Arnold's 'entertainment' sections of the programme, with the rest of the show being taken up by 'proper news' and interviews as normal.
That way, you're giving some level of information about it without alienating people who couldn't care less.

I think GMB going completely to Holywood for the Oscars last year only happened because of Piers, due to him being highly connected to Los Angeles through his friends/associates and because he lives there. It was clearly just an expensive, unncecesary 'fun trip' for the presenters and crew, and as demonstrated by the understandable backlash to it, wasn't done for the benefit of viewers.
The breakfast shows have always gone overboard with the Oscars, I remember they used to do back in the days of The Big Breakfast, when they’d cut off Johnny Vaughan in full flow, because there was a sighting of a big star within 20 feet of Donna Air or whoever they’d sent over there to interview the stars
It's one day a year - usually harmless and there is no harm in breaking the regular cycle for something which may be considered a bit of fluff. Yes, they go over the top on it but it's an over the top event, and generally gives them the opportunity to speak to stars who they simple can't for the rest of the year. Not every episode every day of the year has to be the same.
The only memorable bit of their last Oscars show was the discussion- involving Joan Collins and Perez Hilton- where they discussed Phillip Schofield’s coming out (which had happened the previous Friday).

I Wouldn't be surprised. I'm assuming that this was part of their March 2018 Contract renewal. Remember that they went in 2019 as well
I genuinely believe a high %age of people couldn't give a stuff about the Oscars any year. It is always given fair more coverage in all broadcast media than is necessary.

With what content though, without endless red carpet interviews and afterparty buzz to fill the time? There's only so much you can do with acceptance speeches.
