Good question. To be part of the pool system they'd have to contribute as well as take. I suspect they wouldn't have the resources to be able to do that, I don't know what sort of kit their crews will be working with (If they even have crews as such) - full broadcast quality ENG kit or prosumer DSLR... or even just mobiles

They can if they pay a fee to PARBUL. Sky, the BBC, ITV, Ch4 and Ch5 are all shareholders in PARBUL, everyone else pays.


I wonder if they've done any deals with other broadcasters or news outlets for footage, either news or archive? They're at an unusual position of starting a news channel from scratch - they won't have years of material they can use or any existing relationships.

The big news agencies won't be any good for UK stories as the footage provided for AP is from Sky and Reuters comes from the BBC. In both cases its all out of bounds to other UK subscribers. So any agency they did sign up to would only useful for foreign stories, though they do often have UK pool material. I'm not sure if that is usable in the UK, but then when I used to deal with this sort of stuff there wasn't any broadcasters in the UK who weren't in the pool!

So it will be interesting, particularly in the early days to see what sort of pictures they show for a story.

Guido had a story the other day suggesting that the Government was proposing to include GB News in the daily media round by Government ministers, whilst dropping another right-of-centre outlet at the same time (presumably TalkRadio).

I couldn't find the story when I went back to look for it, so it may not have been accurate.

It would be a big credibility boost to be rid of TalkRadio, and have Andrew Neil potentially asking questions in person during the briefing.

Considering the daily media round is in the morning I doubt it would be Neil…

Aha, yes I don't really think of them for video, I've only known them as a wires service. Presumably that's where newspapers get a lot of their video content?

I notice they own a company called Globelynx who have a network of down the line cameras at various organisations (companies, universities etc) I wonder if GBN will be making use of those? Although as we've seen the last year the need for DTL cameras has diminished

It would make sense, but I suppose ultimately it depends on which outlet becomes more prominent and has a higher viewer/listenership. TalkRadio has struggled with an audience.

Talk is part of a larger news operation, they will have colleagues from one of their newspapers or Times Radio there

Just to clarify, if the 'daily media round' is definitely what we're talking about here, it's the live interviews that ministers do with the breakfast programmes on TV and radio - it's not a briefing.

There are only so many live interviews a minister can realistically fit in during the peak breakfast hours - hence the finite number of slots, which would seem to be what's led to this speculation.

Example of the media round timings from one day last week below, hard to see where they can fit another in. I've seen Julia Hartley Brewer from Talkradio Breakfast on twitter complain about ministers overrunning and cancelling on her show a few times.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland broadcast round: Today program (6.50 a.m.) … Sky News (7.05 a.m.) … Times Radio (7.20 a.m.) … LBC (7.50 a.m.) … Today program (8.20 a.m.) … Good Morning Britain (8.30 a.m.) … TalkRADIO (9 a.m.).

Looking at GB News competition, talkRADIO has seen a distinct drop in the amount watching their live stream on YouTube.

I have noticed the drop starting as the unlocking of the country (especially England) from early April 2021.

They currently have 268,000 subscribers to their YouTube channel, and I have noticed a distinct drop over the last 4 to 6 weeks. A typical daily edition of the mid morning Mike Graham Show used to get between 6,000 and 7,000 watching during the live show. Today he struggled to get around 2,000 watching live.

A drop has been seen in all of their shows, especially people watching live, which is an important part in their ratings overall surely.

I also watched the Ian Collins programme, around 1.00pm, and he used to manage around 2,000 live stream watchers, this afternoon be barely struggled to get 600 at around 1.10pm. Now that has to be worrying for talkRADIO.

With these dwindling numbers for talkRADIO, does this prove a worrying sign to GB News, that just maybe there is not an audience there for them to have? Who knows!

A lot of their audience were from lockdown sceptics, which as lockdown restrictions have been eased to where they were last summer again would have lost them some of their audience.

GB News could have capitalised with an audience against restrictions, but I suspect by the time they actually launch that we may be back to some resemblance of normality.
