I just wanted to say how clever the new BBC 1 Idents are.

I might be reading more into this than I should but...
Do each of the idents clearly display a figure 1 in some form, be it a person or object as the camera pans round e.g. a fence post, bollard, glitter ball being raised etc.
It is very subtle but present.

Ah, but the BBC have never said that they are called "Lens". Pres fans created that term. So perhaps it isn't actually meant to look like a lens as it was never actually a lens?

Well man.vs.machine have now debunked that by saying the theme is "British life through a lense".

I do think these can only get better and as we saw with the circles and heck, perhaps even Oneness, the later additions often stand out much more.

I think too there is potential for programme related idents to feature if they get the execution right. For example Strictly final idents intercutting routines from the finalists or you could have a period drama ident cutting from the scene as it was for the shoot to how it looks now to perhaps it in the process of them filming. I think as long as the basic premise remains there is quite a lot than can be done with the idea, and not just limiting themselves to idents shot at three points during the day.

No, that's the official term.

Hearing the soundtrack a little closer, I don't know why but I constantly hear the "Xbox Series S/X" bootup in the music of these.

But it's very ambient and really works for the vibe that BBC One has, a laid-back, somewhat exciting at times, channel that represents the country as a whole. I do kinda hope to see the Lens concept developed further, because this doesn't sound like something they'll just go and forget.

The new idents are quite nice and certainly an improvement on their predecessor, though it would be hard for them not to be, but I'm a bit surprised by some of the reaction on here. From the posts, I assumed the change was a lot more radical than it actually has been.

People keep talking about homages to previous idents, but the ones they most resemble are actually Oneness. They may be executed a lot better, but the core premise is fairly similar - everyday life across Britain in halls, the countryside, etc. The also share the rather sedate pace of Oneness, a fairly nothingy soundtrack and poor usage of the signature colour (if anything a rather cold blue seems to be dominant). It may be why it took me nearly a day to notice they had changed, even though I had had earlier junctions on in the background. It's more an evolution than a radical change. An evolution in the right direction, sure, but fundamentally I think they are good, but nothing special.

You can't be the first channel in Britain and play with crazy ideas, or even go completely CGI like BBC Two.

Granted, the last set was TOO safe, but the current one is a good compromise

At 6:15 this evening, before BBC News, the Sky - Evening ident was introduced. Just the Sky - Daytime ident left to be revealed!

If we're talking about what these new idents most remind us of, for me, they put me in mind mainly of ITV's 2013 set.

Strip away the BBC's lens effect and ITV's colour picking logo and you're left with the same thing - slowly panning scenes of people getting on with a variety of day to day activities.

These young girls could quite easily have been having a ballet practice in that room which is hosting the trampolining and neonatal classes in the BBC's new 'Hall' set, for example.

When done well, I think there's something quite pleasing about this 'ordinary people going about their day' type of ident, as you can't fail to feel some form of connection to what you're seeing, so there's something of a comforting familiarity about them.

The skater/raver one looks a little odd as it don't look like the same place but the rest are lovely. Personally the farmland one is up there.

They kind of remind me of the original Sky Atlantic idents.

I mean the balloon were iconic and anything ever made will be compared to them and not be as good but, that aside I think they have got character and work really well.

I honestly disagree, and I feel like I have to apologise for being against something that seems to be liked by the majority. I genuinely do not want to be a moaner with this, but it’s the fact that without the logo, it could quite easily be for any other mainstream channel. For me, it’s not uniquely BBC1.

I like the lens as a concept, but as you say, it could easily have applied to ITV in 2013, or perhaps several others, like Channel 4 in 1996, or Scottish/Grampian in 2000, or five/UK Gold in 2002. The “people doing things” aspect also makes it difficult to instantly tell if it’s a trailer, an ident or an actual programme. It’s going to sound stuffy (and I say this as someone who’s only 34), but you did kind of know where you were with older symbols front and centre.

The idents literally came out yesterday, of course it's not immediately identified as BBC1.

I personally think that some of you need to take a step back for a little while and think about what you're posting, as some of the posts in this thread make for rather depressing reading.
