Very classy. Interesting that objects pass in front of the subtitles text unlike others.
The more I see of these, the more I like them.
It's a really interesting idea, and they are very well executed. I love the idea of the same locations at different points in time.
The lens effect itself is really good because it means we've got a circle for BBC One again, and as I think a couple of others have observed, the motion of the lens slightly calls back to the mirror globes.
As a mere layman presentation enthusiast, these really hit the mark for me.

As closedown junctions go, you've got to say that's a pretty lovely one. Actually other than Central's starry night sequences I'm struggling to think of a nicer one. I'm sure the night time bench version would work really well too with a long playout.
Are they are all filmed down south? No wonder nations had a fit. Regardless of where they been filmed I think they are great though.

To me, it's a bit like criticising Turner for painting a quiet, reflective Margate scene and failing to capture the party going on on the beach. You wouldn't describe him as missing an opportunity, I think you'd just accept that he has a slightly different objective.
I find I really connect with these films. They beautifully reflect that cycle of life, and how we can all find joy, function or common ground within particular locations, even if we never meet each other. My local community centre that I use for pre-natal classes is also used by dancers later in the week. I'll never meet them, but it's nice to think that we're all just as welcome. I totally respect that others don't click with them like that, though I wish the tone of voice was a little kinder.
I do agree that even more locations would be nice, but it's worth remembering the huge cost of each new setting. It's true that trailers get money thrown at them, but there's a clear KPI there – hopefully more viewers for that particular show. With idents, it's hard to argue for 8 films rather than 6. So variants of each location is a nice 'win'.
Thoughts on what we can objectively conclude about the idents:
- There is a solid concept here – same location, different activites/events
- High production values – a well-crafted soundtrack, good camera work, good selection of locations
- Clear effort – there is a significant 'set up' for each ident: filming each at different times of days, getting lots of extras/actors involved, heavy use of advanced camera rigs
- More than the 'bare minimum' – each location has yielded multiple variants
I do wish that they could have launched back in October, as it would have made a nice impact being changed with the other presentation. But, complicated organisations have complicated politics. I do look at ITV and think 'they'd have never done it like this' – but they're also a company with many fewer outlets and the commercial factor comes first almost always. The BBC have to be much more careful, and we don't know the other factors involved in playing things.
There's also part of me that would like to see the circular device on screen for longer, to emphasise it. Yet undoubtedly they tried doing that, and decided against it. I actually think the gradual shift to a normal scene is really beautiful, and if it happened later in the ident it might get missed quite often. Sometimes minimal and subtle is best.
I do so often laugh at the hypocritical 'forum logic' (not that it's a homogenous view) – people reject 'marketing guff' (actually, narrative rationalisation is really important) and say 'why can't we just have something that looks nice'. When we have something that looks nice (in my view), we hear 'but what does it mean'?
Ultimately I conclude that they can never win, there will always be critics. And indeed there should be. But I find the joy of reading these threads has almost gone for me in recent years, because the ability to explain your view, ponder the decision-making process and come to a considered view – rather than post a simplistic one-liner – has became far from the norm.
That's actually a very interesting insight. I feel like this forum just can't be pleased with anything anymore. It's just negativity and potshots thrown at other people. These idents are lovely and clearly have had a lot of effort put into them, and to see them dumped on is heartbreaking. People are obviously allowed to have their own opinions; it's just I feel this forum has become so negative.

I wish people weren't so negative about them too. ManVSMachine and BBC Creative had clearly done a fantastic job making BBC One look better than it did with Oneness and it clearly shows that their efforts have worked out well in the execution of these idents.
A lot of work and thought have gone into these idents and I'm really looking forward to the planned 2nd batch coming soon.
Just wish Rob could sort out all this negativity but people are entitled to their own opinions, just that the negativity needs to die down a little bit.
People having a negative view about the idents isn't anywhere near as draining as people complaining about people sharing their honest opinions. Seriously this thread was running smoothly until those comments - don't derail it now because some members views don't conform to your own.

It's really effective at signing off - but then to crash straight into the BBC News theme kind of ruins what it is trying to achieve. Perhaps needs a "BBC News follows shortly..." slide after it, or even just a blip might do the job.

I'm sorry but this isn't a fanpage for graphic designers - people have the rights to their own opinions and if they don't like them that is fair enough. Appreciation comes with good work, not just work.
I disagree actually about this thread being negative - it's fair to say it's not unanimously positive but for me the general reception has been one of approval, and moved beyond "anything's better than Oneness" too. Yes, there are quite a few including myself (and interestingly actually a few of us old timers) who've been disappointed by what we've seen but on the whole the criticism has been constructive and it's the execution of some idents rather than the idea as a whole which is seen as the problem - and even then an appreciation that some idents work far better than others.
Opinions will also change over time - some of us who hated them at first sight will grow to love them, some who loved them on their first outing will soon tire of them. For me I think the initial set is a bit on the dull side but I think there is so much potential in the idea moving forward.
Overall the BBC will likely be fairly happy with the response - they've been quietly welcomed with only a bit of constructive criticism and they seem to have purposely wanted to avoid a grand unveiling which attracts headlines.
I really like the new idents, and nice to see the "Globe" back in BBC idents, although it's more abstract, it reminds me of the banded globe effect used by BBC News but replaced by video footage. I suppose the BBC hasn't used a proper globe of the Earth as nowadays it's mostly associated with its news output. Also, it's easily adaptable and can be used in a multitude of environments. As for my point regarding Oneness, the issue wasn't whether the idents are live-action or not, it's how they're executed.
Also the BBC logo and the name of the channel forming not only part of the foreground, but also the background is a nice effect, it draws attention to the logo and the name of the channel as it disappears and you wait for it to reappear again. I can now see why they placed the logo at the top and the name of the channel at the bottom, as it forms a "globe sandwich" and to allow space for the lens.

I like the concept, and with lots of variants, it would be interesting enough.
If there is only to be a few, then I think the execution could do with some tweaks. Maybe moving through this lens an experiencing the different "worlds" that this location exists in - would add that bit of flare I feel is lacking.
I do like the foreground elements passing over the logo and text.
