Market in particular is
quite clearly filmed in or around London, speaking as someone from the north. Hall could be anywhere, Warehouse looks rather South London-y, Farm also looks somewhat southern to me (maybe it's prior knowledge coming into play; there's something about it that just tells me "Southern England").
I really like these. Not trying to do too much but they also look smart and more sophisticated than what we had previously.
There are lots of comparisons being made in this thread with previous idents. I’m wondering if - in the BBC’s centenary year - there’s a deliberate element of nostalgia in the new presentation packages. It started with BBC THREE - the idents, as noted here, are very reminiscent of the idents on the original incarnation of the channel, BBC CHOICE. Now, BBC ONE has launched a new set, with a rotating circular object, some ‘rhythm and dance’ and people coming together…
Makes me intrigued for the BBC NEWS refresh, whenever that comes.
Personally, I find the new idents quite simple yet effective for the purpose they are serving (BBC One’s remit). It’s a massive upgrade compared to Oneness, which I even I didn’t hate it, it was poor for a channel in the style and credibility for a mass-market channel. It has a continuous line with Oneness, but it really conveys the channel’s remit as a mixed-genre TV service.
I was expecting better, but I find these idents good. Yep, theme could be confusing at times, but the idea of “multiple perspectives in a common place” is absolutely well reflected. The lens, indeed, as some of you mentioned, is an excellent nod to the globe, but also updated to reflect the core idea of it, and the perpetual movement around the items has that memory of the Shaun the Sheep christmas idents (don’t know if they are resurrecting them, even if tweaked with the lens). About the places, the selection made by the teams down tools about the criticism of being not sufficiently region-neutral, even if the spectrum of reflected places should have been bigger. The music, even if it is quite generic, it serves its job (compared to having Oneness with no music, just random background noise).
Additionally, the surrounding presentation is now in line with the rest of what debuted in October, and blips can now be connected with the trails (as opposed to trail-lens transition-Oneness). They should have taken, as you said, more risks, and I hope new additions do so, but, otherwise, it is a much needed upgrade for a channel for the status it has.
I didn't realise these were happening today, so slightly embarrassed to admit I thought the one at 20:30 was a promo for EastEnders at first - then I heard the voiceover and wondered what was going on.
Interesting concept, but not really blown away by it. Obviously far, far better than the mugs of tea we were seeing on high rotation just a few months ago.
It does seem that with promos ending with a v/o "watch now on iPlayer" despite upcoming episodes still to air on BBC One not mentioned, and now these idents (nice but no symbol of sorts) - the BBC doesn't really want BBC One to have a particularly strong identity at all.
Not necessarily a criticism, just a comment.
A very Strictly feel for the second Hall ident - it pretty much feels like you're on the dancefloor dancing your merry way with the lights, other ballroom stuff and of course that glitter ball being raised to the ceiling - the most suitable ident to link to Strictly by far. 5 idents in and Lens is really outshining Oneness by a very large margin!!
I like it tbh its much better then Oneness at this moment i am just struggling to see the connections as to what happens in the lens, as why are people trampolining but then it shows someone in a wheelchair and i dont get it so far, but I love how the bbc and the subtitles and the one disappear, this is much more like how the BBCs flagship channel is suppose to be not dumbness which proceeded it.

The connection is the same place, different events.
I think one improvement that could have been made is for the lens animation to have gone through another rotation or two, just to emphasise the effect,
Having seen a few more of the idents, I can see the idea more clearly in some than others. Farmland, for example, works well because the fence is a constant across all three of the scenes and it's therefore immediately apparent that you're seeing the same place, used in three different ways. That, for me, is the strongest one I've seen.
Hall works well too, as you can follow the staircase across all three scenes and therefore you are under no illusion that it's the same hall being utilised differently. These two, I like.
Market, I don't think too much of, however, personally. If I didn't know that the location was supposed to be the same in all three scenes, I wouldn't have known. Watching it closely, and deliberately looking out for similarities, I can see elements where this is obvious but if I were watching as a casual observer, I would not have understood that the man sitting down outside the MOT garage with a load of car seats (?) around him was meant to show what that place is like when the market isn't running. The garage is completely obscured when the market stalls are up so it isn't obvious enough that it is meant to show the same place to me. (As an aside, I agree with a previous poster's comparison to EastEnders as it is very obviously a London-centric shooting location. If you were shooting that ident and lived in London you'd think 'there you go, that's universal, it's just a market' but to me in the north east, it's clear where it's been shot. Not necessarily a negative since they've made idents to cover different areas of the country, but it IS noticeable.)
That skating/art class(?)/nightclub(?) one in a warehouse/railway arch is the weakest of the bunch for me. Not at all clear that the location is the same and just looks to me like two completely unconnected scenes being shown while people skate in the background.
The fact that the lens effect is so fleeting in the idents really does not help in the cases of Market and Skaters.
Will continue to look out for new idents and variants to ones I've seen. So far, I really dislike one, think one is alright, and really like two. Not an appalling ratio thus far.
Warehouse Rave is a great ident - reminds me of the party ident on BBC Alba. The lights and overall atmosphere in the warehouse is something you would expect on a Saturday night - pure excitment.
The lens effect is far too simple. It's just a cut out circle, not a lens.
But more importantly, it needs to last longer, and the circle needs to stay on screen for the WHOLE ident.
4/10.
At least the idea behind these idents is quite straightforward so I can foresee there being several additions over time.
