Would The Voice hold up okay in Q4 against Strictly? Probably not, as I think it only waddles along because of the strong lead-ins from Masked Singer & Takeaway. But ITV could really do with moving something to this time of year and The Voice seems like the obvious one for me. I've often thought they should just get the rest of the series out of the way in a week once the blind auditions are done, as that is the only part that really engages people.. because it is actually a good concept. They've never really mastered the next few stages.

Q1 seems packed, they have Ant & Dec's Limitless Win (which will have to go out before SNT & BGT), The Masked Singer, The Voice & Dancing On Ice.

They have plenty of formats but I think The Voice just gets lost in Q1 now.

I would move it to the early Autumn schedule. Have the Blind auditions & Battles weekly throughout late August & September. Then do the performance shows stripped in a week. It would feel more of an event.

Then Q1 can breathe a bit more.

I suspect Limitless Win may end up stripped - don't see how else it fits really unless it is weekly on Sundays in January, which seems unlikely.

ITV Press says 5 Saturday Nights. Not sure how it fits though? Unless they delay The Voice (or move it to Sundays).

I guess they could just start The Voice a few weeks later, in early February. It ended a couple of weeks before Saturday Night Takeaway did this year and they could maybe do a couple of Sat/Sun doubles with the later rounds to ensure it doesn't run into BGT. Starting later, rather than at the same time as Masked Singer & Dancing on Ice might give it some room to breathe.

Do agree with the suggestion to move it to early Autumn though. Start before Strictly and don't drag the later stages out for too long and it might work. There's so much going on in Q1 and there's the long awaited Starstruck to fit somewhere as well (presumably now for Q2, possibly on Sundays?).

And ironically just as we're discussing this, ITV put a press release out about the new series of The Voice, saying they've changed the format:

So the battles are ditched, presumably? Auditions > Callbacks > Semi Final > Final.

It doesn't detail much about the Callbacks but it sounds similar to what they did in Australia this year after the auditions, and they got through that in less than an episode. So could be a shorter series, with only a few episodes after the auditions this time?

In terms of airdate, it says 2022 but nothing more specific, so nothing to go off really. They're filming now which probably means it will air in Q1, although I guess they've sat on The Voice Kids all year so not ruling anything out.

I’m guessing now then with a shorter format, that does probably lend itself to starting after Limitless Win & still being wrapped up by BGT without the need to Sat/Sun any weekends?

In some ways, yes; in others, no.

Seems a bit harsh, certainly the audition shows are about as big as it gets for ITV on Saturday nights, normally bigger than Takeaway. Lives tail off a bit but still rate very well across the week. Will be interesting though to see where it returns, 2020 was a bit of a distortion really, with the auditions airing in the first lockdown but then the lives being delayed, changed format and not actually live. By the time it returns it will have been 3 years since its last series in normal circumstances.

I guess so yeah.

They could always tweak things and air The Masked Singer half an hour earlier and The Voice half an hour later to free up the 8pm hour for Limitless Win, but it seems unlikely they'd have three big formats back to back.

Next autumn both the BBC and ITV effectively lose a month with the World Cup starting on the 21st Nov, meaning it's likely Strictly will end on the 19th and both channels have up to 12 weeks to schedule (from 3rd Sept) for the autumn rather than 16. That does mean though they have three months to schedule over the summer, but its unlikely they'd push back The Voice till then.

The World Cup could cause I'm A Celeb problems as well next year.

I think the kick-offs are 3pm & 7pm UK time? So I guess it could air after a match.

It should be fine to air as usual just potentially at 9.30pm.

The Voice has squeezed itself into even more of a shorter format. It sounds like the callbacks might be even shorter. It’s weird to ditch The Battles for something much more generic.

Potentially, it means the teams will get smaller. Maybe if they need 6 acts for their team the blind auditions could be 4 weeks, followed by callbacks and then the 2 live shows. Would make it 7 weeks which would fit into the rest of the schedule (and could also begin the phasing out of the show if it’s not doing too well in the ratings?).

ITV won't of course but considering this is their norm now I'd rather see the second episode axed on a Friday and the reruns air 8-10pm. Ideally they'd also axe the 2nd Thursday episode of Emmerdale but use the money saved from those to invest in a new weekly hour long drama.

Soaps expenses are such that the cost of one episode is less than the cost of half a weekly drama.
