I think you're right on the News icon resembling a map of the world - certainly looks like this from the way it animates. It seems to have a 'revolving globe' kind of effect before it settles.
I am interested to see whether these icons are actually incorporated into TV output - ie. Will it be seen at the start of the Six/Ten and on the News Channel, or is it exclusively for the App/Online? There seems to be big questions over the branding of BBC News following this rebrand...

If you watch how it spins then settles, spins then settles, I can imagine it doing this in time with the pips of the current music.

Would love it if they could use it as part of the titles. Maybe using various images from the days news in blocks the same shape as the three blocks of the icon, spinning round the screen like the icon spins, then fading to red and shrinking into the icon, and spinning a couple more times before becoming the BBC News logo.

The 2008 design has been used by BBC News for more than 13 years.

It looks more like a representation of different stories.
When I first saw it I thought it was meant to represent speech bubbles. Either way I suppose it works for news.
Yeah. Looks like an abstracted newspaper layout.
I think the main thing worth nothing about the BBC ONE rebrand is the colour palette on the channel. Say goodbye to the bright red!
