Yes, I had BBC Sounds on the menu banner to find and iPlayer on Google, all with icons only.

Hopefully it at least indicates a complete revamp for the BBC News identity as that icon doesn't fit with the now 13 year old titles at all, or indeed the new regional news titles. The aston and straps though should be fine.

Leaving aside my views on the logo, the animations that I have seen actually do look quite nice and swish. My main reservation would be that if the new look does rely heavily on these app-like movements, how future-proofed is it? The whole dynamic movement style has been 'in' for quite a few years already and I wouldn't be surprised if it fell out of fashion by the end of this decade. What is the BBC left with when that happens? It either carries on with them and looks outdated or has to fall back on something rather substandard or expensively rebrand again.

I think there's a problem with introducing textless logos for the BBC's sub-brands before the symbols themselves are well-known. You look at other brands that don't have any text, like Nike, Audi, Apple, Twitter, etc., and their logos all began life with the name included until the logo became synonymous. I just don't think it works if you try to do it the other way around, as the symbols don't mean anything to anyone yet.

It does sound like there might be slightly different versions people are seeing, the one I saw almost always had 'News', 'Sport', 'Weather' etc. next to the icons. The only exception was when it showed me a news story card in Google search results, when it was just the BBC logo next to the News icon, without the 'News' text, but given it was a list of news articles and said 'BBC', it was pretty obvious where the article was from.

Mmm, it does sound like they're testing different applications of the icons on different users. I was asked to click on where you'd expect to find BBC Bitesize on the mockup BBC Food page – and the icons at the top had no accompanying text. I also was shown some Google results, but it was the BBC logo with the sport icon... which initially I thought was an icon for business, given it looks like a bar chart.

I think you’d struggle with just the shapes on their own, but as we all know yellow is sport, pink is iPlayer etc.

This is a standard approach for such research - it's called A/B Testing or Cohort testing. They will compare which variations of icons / layouts deliver the 'best' results (depending on how they have defined 'best', of course.

From all of what we've seen I still struggle to see the logic for the text, when it does appear, being smaller within the box.

I think like most people I've only seen the BBC News and BBC Two logo in two forms and neither worked particularly well. If they're being dynamic in their animation perhaps it would be best for the logo to never actually appear with the channel name and instead transition into it.

Good ideas. However, I don’t know whether or not they’ll go with the horizontal logos, but if it’s boxed/stacked, like the third concept, I have a feeling it may be a “soft-reboot” of sorts of the BBC Two logos we’ve had previously.

If that (in yellow instead of white) is what the new sport icon looks like, then it's clearly supposed to be a podium, like when athletes get their medals at the Olympics.

I was thinking that was what it was supposed to be, considering the "bar chart" comment

We all know that on here as branding and presentation enthusiasts, but I’m pretty certain my 76 year old mum would be baffled by a row of unfamiliar icons, coloured or otherwise. Plus, you’ve got people who are colourblind to consider.

The blocks are horizontal on the actual icon, so I don’t think it’s meant to be that.
