So Wikipedia's saying the Oneness idents will cease to be on air from the 20th October?
Is the 20th the final date?

I wouldn't really credit Wikipedia as a reliable source of information - it can be edited by anyone and it's likely it was done so by someone who's skimmed through this thread or an article.

Ittr is right, nothing's been said on a source that Wikipedia would accept as a citation. What page was that on? I'll head over there and remove it if someone hasn't already taken care of it.

Am I the only one who wonders what the new bbc one idents will be everyday?

I noticed a new BBC Trending Now Promo, with some elements that might be similar to the BBC blocks in the new logo, as they are looking like them.

The 'Trending Now' promotion has been running since mid-June, so not that new.

Generally speaking, no one can "invest" in the BBC, taking that word in its literal meaning. As with any publicly owned utility, the Government heavily limits what loans it can take or any investments in it. That's how I understand it anyway.

Wouldn't be good value for money. Companies only bid on franchises to make profit and suck money out of the company for their shareholders. No private company would spend a few million quid placing a bid, with the possibility of never seeing that money again if they lose, and then if they win just write that money off. From day 1 they will claw that money back - and that's money that's not going into programme making.

The only other reason private companies might invest in a bidding process is if they believe they can increase income, either through attracting more customers or making efficiencies. That is not possible if we keep the fixed license fee model with no advertising - their income for the year will be largely fixed (give or take fluctuations in the numbers of people paying the fee). If we keep a BBC Trust type model where they decide the services which can exist and the scope of them, that means the companies bidding won't be able to easily cut services or change them to potentially attract more license payers (which must be out of the ones who currently choose not to pay).

If we were somehow able to find a company who had a spare few million down the back of the sofa to bid, who didn't claw that money back, and which didn't care about making any profit, we'd have to ask ourselves what's in it for them? The answer to that can only be "control of a publicly funded broadcaster" which is, shall we say, ominous.

And if we found a company which did attempt to make a profit, as they are legally obliged to do under Companies House rules, even a modest one, that's still money taken away from programme making.

Finally there is also the problem we (used to) see on the railway franchising model where, when a successor is announced and it's not the same company, they just start sucking as much final profit out as possible. Don't clean the trains as often =more profit. Close ticket offices earlier/entirely = more profit. Don't offer as much catering = more profit. Run more replacement buses = more profit. They literally have no reason to perform to the best of their ability, and no reason to invest further in their staff/buildings/infrastructure or, crucially, passengers as they know that within a year they are not going to exist.

I do hope the last link on BBC One the night before the rebrand gives this one last airing to see out the current logo the very memorable way it was brought in.
