May have been intentional to not have an ident - with two pieces of breaking news (lockdown ending news, and G7 finance) and a pending taped interview with the Chancellor they may have wanted to shorten the headline sequence.
I’m going to be controversial seen as most of you seem to like the new updated music.
I don’t unfortunately, it sounds a bit keyboardy and feels like they’ve used virtual instruments compared to a real orchestra which was used previously. (I might be wrong, but if it was an orchestra it feels very compressed)
The vamp sounds like there’s too much going on for an underscore and a bit clashy.
Also the actual theme sting (ident) has changed where it feels like your playing a slow version of the way it was before, the 1/2 beat notes have been replaced with 1 beat notes - just seems odd.
One thing that has changed that I am pleased about, is that an interviewee, guest or correspondent's name is now in bold as opposed to their profession. I always thought it was a slightly distasteful move in 2015 to place the emphasis on the occupation or role, even if it was the more relevant piece of information to the viewer. To me, it was a small but significant de-humanising tone that I didn't like. I'm glad Sky News has reversed this in the refresh.
Isn't part of the reason why there is a white bar at the bottom to hide the movement of the whole graphic flying in from the bottom of the screen into position which looked tacky on the international feed where there is no ticker or white box? Instead, it appears to us like it generates from the top of the ticker but actually flies in beneath the ticker and box to give that impression. Personally, I wish the sides of the lower thirds were cut, the white box disappears and the graphics generate from the top of the ticker.
And do we really need the intl. feed logo over the top of the clock? I would love to see the clock on Youtube as you could rewind to whenever a story broke or a programme you knew the time it started. You have to calculate how many hours ago it was and scan over the timeline to gauge when in the hour you are. Surely that can go and just have GMT or BST over it?
But I really do appreciate all the designers' work to freshen up the look and sound of the channel too!

That was the case for the old graphics, but the new ones are masked off above the ticker

As mentioned though, the split service didn’t last too long and eventually they scrapped the side panel on the HD version and just down scaled that for SD.
Okay. So there was a time when there was two TDs essentially running the show. Not very efficient. It looked the same except in the two box shots the right box was resized and image was centered.

Although originally the SD graphics were much larger, in line with how big the previous set had been. Then in 2011 or 2012 they reduced the size as seen in that video.

Thanks for showing this, in that case there is no reason in my view why the white box needs to be there anymore. Even with the ticker, it would look a lot cleaner.
One thing I am starting to miss about the old TOTH sequence is the ticker slide-in animation. It was so perfect and it even had a 'slide' sound!

The new ticker just awkwardly pops up from the bottom once the presenter is ready to start.

There was only one director in the gallery controlling one vision mixer (switcher in US terminology) which ran the HD feed. However this was slaved to another vision mixer frame which ran the SD feed, so the SD feed automatically followed the HD feed. As such the output on the two services was exactly the same, just with the SD vision mixer taking different inputs for the graphics and for the video server playing the titles.
As you can see in the early days some of the split screen memory recalls had the DVE windows positioned slightly differently between the two mixers so that they made room for the sidebar on the HD service. However if I recall correctly this was quickly dropped in favour of making sure all shots made room for the sidebar, which they had to do anyways to be 4:3 safe as was requried at the time.
Sky use the same workflow now for Ultra HD on Sky Sports so that they can mix the UHD world feeds with their production around it which is still entirely in HD. The director mixes the HD feed, and there's a UHD vision mixer slaved to it which follows.

Possibly off topic but for Sky Sports why not just have one UHD mixer and feed and downscale it to HD ?
Edit: On thinking more about this I assume it’s to avoid the HD -> UHD -> HD scaling for the HD feed for their own cameras, where as if it’s separate things are only down scaled or upscaled once.
