Well not really, in response to that anyway. Just one dig at Kay Burley and one quipping "Who died". Everything else is people being overwhelmingly positive or genuinely interested in the procedure - well, the fashion element of it anyway.
Scheduling wise for next week will be interesting to see what happens with the FA Cup Semi-Final. It could be bumped later to 7.30/8pm, but given how the BBC handled a Womens game on BBC4 on Friday I just can't see them feeling it appropriate to show it. Moving it to Sunday seems the most likely outcome - I know they're trialing crowds at one of them but the Sunday match isn't until 6.30pm so an early afternoon kick-off should be fine, with Chelsea's Tuesday night PL match then put back 24 hours.

What’s funny is when I was watching on Saturday morning, on a different newer TV, the black ident was perfectly legible. So either they’d changed it or it just depended how decent your TV was. It may have been one of those things that looks right on high end equipment at ITV but doesn’t look right in variable domestic equipment at home.
Regarding said announcer he did just go with “Now with the latest headlines, it’s ITV News!” into the news special on Saturday morning

worth commenting on the News of course but completely unnecessary to change your timetable.

I'm wondering what planet she was on? It's not as if S4C ran 12 hours of uninterrupted coverage.

Indeed, simulcasting Radio 4 on Radio 1 and 1xtra for hours one end really is one of the inexplicable things about this. It's hard to think of something more alienating to the target audience, much more so than taking BBC2 and 4 off air.
Yeah, why didn't they utilise Newsbeat? is the question I'm most interested to hear the answer to.
Is Newsbeat well enough resourced to do any significant coverage of their own these days. After the initial scripted announcement, what would they do next? You presumably can’t just have people ad-libbing, most presenters are used to nothing more than a bulletin lasting 3 minutes with two 15 min bulletins per day that are generally really tightly packed.
I suppose they could have immediately gone into the sombre music mix, and just repeated the news frequently

Yes. I believe News would then have provided a suitable point to opt out after about 15 minutes.
For Four to then close down?
Had the announcement came after 7pm, surely the outcome of the rest of Four’s output wouldn’t have been any different? I doubt they’d have simulcast all evening alongside One & Two?
Yes, as I understand it they would've joined for the formal announcement and then after approx 15 minutes gone to the slide for the rest of the evening.

And if they hadn't they'd have been complaints the news wasn't being covered in Welsh. It looks like they generally had 15 minute news bulletins and a 30 minute tribute programme on a cycle, with a brief edition of their afternoon magazine show at 2pm and a half hour edition of Heno at 7.30pm and a couple of other programmes during the day which were probably not the usual schedule but appropriate alternatives.

Bizarre, especially as S4C took even longer than Channel 4 to get back/back on air which is probably to do with how they had literally just signed off their just-under 5 minutes long lunchtime news summery when the BBC NC broke the news

That does feel like the best thing for them to have done considering. Much more appropriate for the target audience.

Some more
"its called doing your job"
"it’s not about you"
"Come off it. A 99 year old bloke who's been ill for a while dying is not a 9/11 moment as much as you might want it to be"
"Who cares...."
"Drama queen"
"He was not a God. Get over it."
"It's not about you love, yeah." - I like her Kay like response here where she says "It’s my Twitter feed, yeah"
"‘A 99 year old billionaire aristocrat is dead’. - Not that hard - Thumb sucking mawkishness aside"
"Will you forget the weight of announcing many thousands of deaths where the loved ones said goodbye via iPad or not at all? The DoE died with his wife with him" (I call this whataboutism where no matter what someone posts about some says what about x y or z) of course she will remember the grim duty of announcing deaths daily for a year
"if we get a comment from kay it'll be all the rule breakers together !?" - that is the one Brekkie refers too in his reply to me when Beth Rigby says "you handled the weight of that moment with true professionalism & poise"
& some more odd ones
"Why don't they have mourning shroud on hand in the studio so we know what you are announcing than worrying if you are suffering from a bout of indigestion for a few moments".
"Jose Mourinho did it without any rehearsals"
but yes most people are praising her but why do people feel the need to pile in every time with negativity
I too was interested in the situation with the black clothing, Does every presenter keep an outfit there specifically for them or do they have black suits in all different sizes ready so a presenter can just grab one when needed?

Thought 6 Music did a fairly decent job on the Friday evening once they were set free - one they should have been allowed to do a few hours earlier. But then dragging it out into Saturday and cancelling specialist shows on local radio in the evening for increasingly witless coverage-for-the-sake-of-it was way over the top.
Again, can understand the logistical challenges behind all this - particularly with a pandemic on - and again, they'll always be criticised for something, but they really could have done better with radio as a whole.
Absolutely agree 6 Music did a brilliant job. Getting Gideon Coe in to present - in a studio for the first time in a year - was a very good idea, arguably their best presenter, plays it straight, and has been presenting since WDY days. Weekends and overnights are always going to be hard on the music stations, a lot is on pre-rec, especially at the moment, and to go through everything and fish out any inappropriate songs is almost impossible on a Friday afternoon. Personally I think for the next one it would be sensible to join 1/1X and 2/6 or possibly all of them and have a safe pair of hands allowed a bit more respectful leeway. Local Radio should be able to take one of them, and do some opt-outing at the discretion of the managing editor. However as
this article from 2001 says, someone gets blamed and That blameless scapegoat will take lifelong responsibility for paper clip supplies to outlying local radio stations"
Orry Verducci post_id=5708 time=1618137146 user_id=731 Wrote:I think there's lots of questions to be asked with how BBC Radio dealt with it as well. In particular how long Radio 1 and 2 were simulcasting Radio 4, as after the initial announcement and coverage I don't see why they couldn't have returned to their own output with the appropriate playlists and news updates. Listeners of those stations likely don't want to hear continous speech, and so in my eyes they freely handed listeners over to their competition at Global, who handed it perfectly.
Yes, my thoughts too. Radio is consumed differently to TV.
People generally select and watch TV
programmes, but select and listen to radio
channels
Beyond the 'all services' BBC radio announcement at 12:10, the music/entertainment stations should have reverted to something far more casual in style (even if it was still generic over those stations).
As I said up thread, Bauer group stations (free from any PSB obligations of course) handled it well. They gently downshifted the tone of their stations from 12:10, and eased into the announcements at 12:30 (or even later in some cases ?).
It would be interesting to know, the percentages of the population who learnt of the death directly and exactly when via radio or TV broadcasts, compared with via social media/texts/word of mouth etc.
I suspect by 12:30 most of Bauer's listeners knew already anyway.
My wife had LBC on, but she wasn't paying attention, it wasn't until 12:40 when she started to pay attention to the radio that she realised what had happened, and then it dawned on her why she'd heard the national anthem at 12:10 !! Then she Whatsapped me the news, which is how I heard of it.
I think that around 2/3pm, BBC Radio should probably have been divided up into more sensible joined up programmes for the reminder of the day. As as much as Evan Davis is a great broadcaster and did a great job on Friday, he isn't exactly suited to the target audience of the likes of Radio 1
Put R1, 1Xtra, 1Dance and maybe even Asian Network together, then do a programme for R2 + 6Music and keep the R4 programme going for R3, 4Extra and 5 Live.
What happened on 5 Live Sports Extra?

I was expecting Radio 1 to stick with the all-networks special until Newsbeat at 12.45, then for Newsbeat to do its own thing until 1, then for the downtempo tracks to go on with frequent updates. When I dipped in at 12.55pm I heard someone recalling meeting the duke in 1968 "as a young journalist" - that was little more than ad-libbing too, just in a posher voice.
I had a flick down the dial and found myself listening to Reprezent, which did the downtempo stuff I was expecting from R1.
Could have been worse, a community station near me switched from its usual Heart-style playlist to classical. I know that was the plan for most stations until the 1990s, but still...

It took the joint coverage as well and then some of 5 Live's coverage once it broke away. There was live cricket in progress at the time, I don't know if the commentary made any reference to the news before the interruption but I would expect not.
Do we know which OB company is doing the service yet? Id suspect NEP for the OB and maybe uplinks, much like the wedding?
I've seen Focus being in and out of Windsor yesterday and today doing the rigging.
