I’ve just seen the family ident on an actual TV and the gold doesn’t look too bad actually. Hadn’t noticed the slight animation too.

Not 100% sure if it's ever been broadcast before, but I do remember spotting it on Sky Q's on demand service a few years ago, back when BBC Two was due to rebrand (and everyone was checking the on demand section for previews of the new idents, since they were on there for whatever reason).

I vaguely remember this being an issue with the Olympic opening ceremony in 2012. So I can only assume that’s why they haven’t put the news on BBC4 given that identical coverage is currently airing on six BBC channels.

Are they the only UK broadcaster to have done this today?

The Papers will probably just be a continuation like it is on the News Channel? A still of one of the less busy BBC Two idents would do for Newsnight.
But tonight on 1 it’s after regional news and weather so there will be an ident I guess.

Suspending BBC Four and replacing with a low bandwidth static screen also gives additional bandwidth to other BBC'A' Freeview channels, would improve PQ for the rest. There's (or there was) a stat mux issue with multiple identical content streams, I suspect that this is being resolved slightly tonight by introducing some varing delay on each channel. There'd be sufficient kicking in on camera/OB switches to reset the stat mux kit.
Can't say for definite but thought it was very odd that, all while during a pandemic, none of today's COVID figures were announced, even if just during the main bulletins or regional news.
Someone posted the announcements on Australian TV earlier, has anyone seen anything from Canada or New Zealand? Would be interested to see how it was announced there and if there have been any alterations to their pres and schedules

Yes it was brushed upon a lot earlier in this thread I think.
Digital TV uses a thing called Statistical Multiplexing. The data rates for the services (channels) on a multiplex aren't fixed but vary according to demand. The idea is that if a service suddenly needs a lot of bits as there's something quite fast moving like sport then chances are one of the others wont be needing as many bits as usual as it'll be showing something slower.
This causes issues when every service is showing exactly the same thing as there's nowhere to get the extra data rate from if needed.
I have heard that's why the plan was for BBC Four to be sacrificed. The problem is that if they want every channel joined up then in England there's BBC One, Two, News and Parliament.... and in Scotland Alba and BBC Scotland appear to be showing the same thing too.
Chances are that it might be OK, but thing is it's never really been tried and perhaps this isn't a great time for stuff to go a bit awry technically
