Yes, you’ve seen nothing yet if you think this was ott. The death of HM will be on a whole other scale - both for the constitutional implications, the fact she’s the Head of State and that she has been Queen for most of our lives.
I think a lot - though by no means all - of the criticism of DofE coverage comes from the ‘Twitter generation’. It’s hard for them, and many of us, to understand the significance of his death to a huge number of people.
In today’s modern media world, it’s arguable perhaps the BBC *should* be doing more coverage as there is so much choice elsewhere should you not care.

If you’re BBC management it’s a lot easier to be criticised by Twitter for going over the top than have Tory MPs and the papers calling for heads to roll for not showing enough respect.

I think ITV will keep the sombre considering that they used the ident to introduce CITV earlier on today.
I remember someone saying on TVF around the time of the infamous Guardian article about Operation London Bridge, that the only way the broadcaster's plans for the Queen's death would be changed would be if people didn't take well to coverage from the Duke of Edinburgh's death, if Philip died before her.
Well, I think after yesterday/today, all the PSBs need to take a look at a few things when they review their royal/major obit plans next.
Not least with ITV finding an appropriate ident that the viewers can actually...see but apart from that minor issue, no complaints from me, amazing coverage. C4 & C5 could do with just fine tuning their pres (C4 could have done with a still of their logo to use instead of a blank programme menu) but I think they both did pretty well yesterday. S4C could have probably done with getting their backsides into gear in Cardiff a fair bit more quickly than they did with regards to the official announcement/newsflash but I'll give them a pass on this occasion as staffing has been slimmed down due to COVID..
Then there is the BBC, they have done quite a few things really well over the last 24 hours, Martine's newsflash was perfection and the special titles used throughout have been very calm. It has been remarkable, yet reassuring, to see that the BBC do have a modern family ident on standby ready for deployment when needed, (though the BBC blocks probably could have been in white) which I suspect is a lesson learnt from 2002 when BBC Two had to use a still of the most suitable personality 2 they could find and BBC One, of course, had to use a still of the ballet ident, only launched the day before.
However, the blanket coverage across 6 channels in the UK (One, Two, News, Alba, Scotland and Parliament) was a tad overboard, BBC Two should have tried to air an appropriate variation of the schedule, using programmes like EastEnders, that had been thrown off of BBC One along with doing some simulcasting and the obit docs.

When the queen dies there is no reason why BBC Two/BBC Four can’t air normal programming and perhaps the odd documentary. BBC Four was literally airing nothing all night, no reason why it couldn’t have aired some BBC One & Two favourites that were originally pencilled in for their schedules.

Talking about presentation, the one-minute long HRH Prince Philip intro was aired on Friday at 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00, 22:00, even on the Papers at 23:00.
I think it is not necessary to be aired every two hours and at the beginning of the Six and Ten. Maybe an intro with the sombre theme (esp on the Six, Ten and the Papers) will be better?
Looks like things are back to normal from 2pm. BBC One showing Rugby, ITV showing the Grand National. Pretty normal news slots this evening.

They appear to be comparing the viewing figures with the long Easter weekend. Not really a fair comparison. Comparison to a normal Friday would be more suitable.
Upon reflection, BBC probably did go overboard with the coverage of the death. So much so they had to update their complaints page about that. Personally, if I were a channel controller I would've just put a graphic on screen telling viewers about a "Major News Report on BBC News/One" rather than to force it upon 6-7 channels (on iPlayer, you could really see how it was a bit excessive!) but as a few forum posters have mentioned, it would be hard to find something quite suitable during that sombre time, especially on radio.
The only suitable alternative to the whole situation was their children's channels, who happened to stay up despite the sombre news, and CBBC did a decent job of telling it's viewers about the death for those who didn't flick over with a Newsround special in the afternoon (a rare occasion knowing they already axed their aftenoon segment). CBeebies didn't do anything, which led to a lot of parents complaining on social media. But when the whole nation is in mourning, I'd argue that they'd at least offer some sort of in-vision continuity about the death or acknowledgement but that's in the past now. Who knows what the BBC, and other broadcasters are planning if the Queen does ever die.
