So, instead of strengthening Sky One by putting more content on it or merging it with another channel like Atlantic or Witness, they're splitting a channel already thin on the ground into two channels, thereby spreading the content even more thinly, and ditching the famous Sky One brand that's been in use for over thirty years, for two brands nobody has ever heard of?

Sounds like a really dumb idea to me.

A shame to see the Sky One brand go but as others have said this somewhat makes sense, although rebranding Sky Comedy as Sky Original Comedy is just unnecessarily clunky.

Guess it'll be like Sky Sports Main Event where shows are promoted as being on Sky Showcase and the genre channel. Is a danger though that it'll basically highlight that their nine channels or so is basically one channels content spread rather thinly, though of course we know the brands are mainly for the benefit of the On Demand world - although Now expecting you to pay an extra £5 for ad free and HD content when with other streamers it is standard is surely not going to be sustainable.

No, in reality, they're creating a "stronger" Sky Replay, and moving a slightly weaker Sky One on Sky Max (which will now be treated as one of the "genre" channels).

Why should they merge Sky One with Witness or Atlantic, anyway? I see it being posted a thousand times, but I do not get it

Obviously they want to focus on genres (and these genre channels are treated as a window for VOD), and Witness and Atlantic cater two particular audiences: for Witness, procedural dramas + some reality show and the likes going on
Atlantic = a (successful at it) kind of British HBO channel

Times have changed since the "old times" of a catch-all Sky One..

I think that was a mistake from an article (a US TV newspaper, so not surprised).

Is it still the case that Sky Atlantic is not available on cable? In that case I'm guessing Sky Showcase won't be either.

Yep, still not the case..

But Sky Replay IS on cable, and they likely will use the same frequencies..

I think both Sky Max and Sky Showcase (especially Showcase) will be on cable; Sky Max because it has generalist content which will lose a lot of viewership if removed from cable.
Sky Showcase.. because it's a sort of.. showcase of the Sky channels? Although it might contain Sky Atlantic shows, otherwise not available on cable

A shame to see the name Sky One go, there were times in the 90s and also in the late 2000s period when it was home to Lost and 24 that it was one of my most-watched channels.

All makes sense, though, with the way they use their linear channels as a shop window for VOD and with Atlantic being the premium drama brand and Witness taking much of the procedural stuff, it's easy to see how Sky One has become a bit diluted over the years, even if it probably has more original programmes than it's ever had.

The logo seems to be similar to that of Italy's Sky Serie, launched on 1st July.

Personally, I was initially expecting them to just rebrand Sky One as something like Sky Channel, but I'd say I'd welcome those changes...

Shouldn't Sky Max be "replacing" Sky One in theory instead? Why do you need a linear shop window channel when the channels are just a few clicks away and the on-demand services exist for that choice alone? Why do you need a scheduler to figure out what to put on at that specific time? What's going on with the rights of The Simpsons? The reshuffle raises more questions than it raises answers.

I guess it's just more exposure for their content, like 4 Seven is for Channel 4. And not everyone has access to the boxsets as they cost extra. If I want to watch a Sky programme I need to record a broadcast, so the more opportunity I have for that the better.

I'm looking forward to these changes
