Sky One was always doomed when Sky Atlantic (dreadful name btw) launched. It diluted the offer too much.
The best Sky One got was a couple of years ago when it inherited lots of original commissions from Sky Living when they focused of acquisitions. Things like Mount Pleasant, The Cafe, Trollied, Moone Boy etc.
Sky Showcase, just seems unnecessary especially if they’re just planning on ‘heroing’ just one episode.
Always thought Sky missed a chance not making it free to view as a proper ‘Channel 6’
In an ideal world, Pick would have been more like C8 in France, which is owned by Canal+, which has it's own programme budget alongside shows previously shown on pay tv channels owned by them.
But it appears Sky/Comcast are happy with Pick ticking away showing 15 year old Sky One shows, Challenge showing old game shows, while Sky Arts and Sky News are a bit more premium on Freeview.

Then they can market it by saying "This is just a sampling of what we offer, there's More on Max" (and Sky/Now as a whole).
Given its "shop window" nature, and the prevelance of promos for Sky premium channels' programmes, maybe it should be called "Try Sky"?!
All I'm going to say on here is that I'm not happy with the decision to rebrand Sky One as Sky Showcase and so on. If anything, Sky Max should've been the new name for Sky One since that one's more like the soon-to-be-rebranded-and-restructured channel, not Sky Showcase as I think Showcase would've fit better as the new name for Sky Replay but that's just me.

And similar to TV8 in Italy, which is also that way because Sky bought the 8th slot on DTT, previously owned by MTV Italy, which is now paying TV only.
But Pick operates in a more crowded free TV market in the UK, definitely compared to France, and partly to Italy

Sky Max is the defacto true "Sky One", actually, just with some local content moved to Sky Comedy
Sky Showcase will be a "new" channel in a way, it'll just be in the same position as current Sky One, simiar to how Sky Sports Main Events is the first channel in the Sports section

Oh come on, since when has Sky News ever felt like a 'premium' channel?? Its (and always has been) a basic free to air channel.
If Sky News HD was free on Freeview, and paywall on satellite you could argue its a bit 'premium' on Freeview.
When Sky Sports News was on Freeview you could say that was a bit 'premium' for Freeview viewers, and Sky Arts still feels like this even though its now FTA.

Love that idea

There's also Sony Max on Sky 715, and Sony Max 2 on Sky 720!
So Sky Max will be the fifth channel with Max in its name.
For your info, Sony Max and Sony Max 2 are for Indian and other South Asian audiences.
Anyway, back on topic. Will the new channels be "launching" by technically rebranding both Sky One and Sky Replay? (I know we will only know by the time approaches, but still...)
My interpretation is that Sky One essentially becomes Sky Max, though with less original content (so Sky One Min), and Sky Replay closes as a catch up channel in favour of Sky Showcase highlighting the core content of the Sky Entertainment channels, so basically simulcasting content rather than repeating it.
Sky Witness is still the brand I don't get - for me Sky Living actually made more sense and offered a bit more flexibility in terms of the content they could show. That said along with Sky One it's programming is the highest rated of the Sky portfolio.

Why it doesn't make sense?
Sky Witness has built its identity, has Incredibles idents too, and by now also has its Italian counterpart, Sky Investigation.
I think it's a better brand in their multichannel world than Sky Living.
It's especially needed because procedural dramas, also after the Universal TV shutdown, need a place
Not sure if I’m alone in this, but ‘Sky Showcase’ reminds me of the short lived ‘BT Sport Showcase’ which was FTA and if I remember correctly hard to find in HD, which felt quite tacky almost(?). That connection just makes Showcase feel like an ill-fitting name for what is (I can only assume) supposed to be Sky’s new centre piece crown jewel.
I think you're overstating its importance
Sky Showcase will just be a linear channel (so without a VOD counterpart) with a mixture of the Sky channels, not a channel/VOD window with its own identity.. for that you get the other Sky entertainment channels
Showcase is basically Sky Sports Main Event for Sky's Entertainment portfolio + The Simpsons.

Hence why I used the term "rebranded and restructured" to describe Sky Showcase.
