I know Sky aren't allowed to launch a dedicated kids tv channel but I doubt they are banned from having a kids block on a channel in the mornings and afternoons?
They definitely aren't banned from having a branded kids block, as if they were, Sky One Undun couldn't have existed in 1995-6, a couple of years after Nickelodeon launched. The Undun branding only got axed because they lost most of their kids shows when Fox Kids launched.

Why would they simulcast a non-premium programme/channel which is available across all broadcast platforms for free, on its own app, on YouTube and on several other streaming platforms?
There's no possible gain of anything; not money, not viewers, literally nothing.

Is that true? Can I be silly and ask why that is?
Something to do with the carriage deal for Nickelodeon I think I've read somewhere before.
Which is a shame as seeing the channels they've bulked up the main section with featuring the Sky name, a Sky Kids channel does seem quite logical.
Pretty sure that when Sky axed the Undun brand and created Fox Kids (timesharing with Sky 2, coincidentally another channel owned by Murdoch at the time), Nickelodeon and Viacom thought that this was Sky launching another kids channel, violating the contract that they agreed upon. However, it never really went anywhere.

I'd put money too on the Sky News simulcast being the first to end. They've tried it multiple times over the years on Sky One, Pick/Sky3 and even Channel 5 at one point but I don't think any run has ever lasted much longer than a few months.

Fox Kids was owned by Fox Family Worldwide, which News Corp only part-owned (Saban owned the other half), and so it was not part of Sky. That's why Viacom couldn't do anything about it, it wasn't Sky launching it.

That was one water tight contract.
It has echoes of the agreement regarding Pat Robertson and The 700 Club, with a contractual requirement for all future owners of The Family Channel (basically Fox and Disney) to show The 700 Club. Although if memory serves Freeform advise their viewers to switch off whilst it’s on.
The Hour of Power has had the Sunday 6:00am slot on Sky One for as long as I can remember. I’d say the agreement to show The Hour of Power must be similar in vein, but you’d have thought closing Sky One would have allowed them to end that agreement. Clearly not if it’s staying on Sky Showcase.
Last time I saw Hour of Power on Sky One (which admittedly was a very long time ago) it had German subtitles... which was bizarre. Almost as bizarre as the idea of Sky One showing such a programme to begin with.

I found out the reason about the German subtitles

Interesting, I didn't know it went out FTA on analogue at least. Did it go out FTA on digital too (or indeed if it did, do they still?).
Still seems bizarre they put on German subtitles though, almost as if they were mostly showing it for the benefit of the German viewers.

In fact that video above was recorded in Switzerland, the analogue Sky Multichannels package could be received throughout Europe, because it used the Astra 19.2°E satellite
I’m amazed the Russell Howard Hour’s still going. I assumed it had ended years ago but clearly has carried on and somehow completely missed my consciousness.

It first aired in September 2017 and has been going ever since.

It's just a rebranding of the programme he had on BBC Three from 2009.
So I decided to check the schedules for Sky One, prime time (5pm-3am) for both 31st of August (last day of Sky One) and 1st of September (first day of Sky Showcase) and...
31st August:
1st September:
...kinda disappointing. Especially for primetime. Even with Code 404 being on Sky Comedy, it's still an ex-Sky One show being broadcast on ex-Sky One. Granted, I'm nitpicking a channel that hasn't had time to really show itself, but surely the schedule should have at least one or two shows from Sky Arts in the mix, or even an odd Sky Witness/Documentaries show in there, especially during prime time.
I get it though, you want to ease the Sky One viewers into Sky Max and Showcase is a way to do that, but you don't need to dedicate an entire evening to JUST Sky Max. It's a dilution to the whole idea of making Showcase a thing.
