I don't think it needs an inquiry - and doubt hosting at Westcountry yesterday is a factor at all. Just an unfortunate mistake (either by Kylie or those scripting the bulketin) - nothing more, nothing less.

If a cock up was a sackable offence, there would be no one left in broadcasting!

The most that will happen is that it'll end up on a YouTube blooper reel.

Sounds to me like another "cross-flannel cherries" or "the next news is at five to sex" moment - simple misread or slip of the tongue (perhaps she jumped a few lines in the script?).

Hardly a sackable offense, especially given she seemed to realise what she said almost immediately.

Inevitably this has been picked up widely by the media as such gaffes are and in the spirit of it raising a chuckle on Christmas Day. If anything the Pope owes her a drink - his comments are arguably being wider reported now due to this than they had been in the hours before.

What was the context of the gaffe? I'm assuming a subsequent story referred to a death being announced.

By all means, talk about the incident as much as you like, but speculation of people's health is not wanted or needed here.

Ray Illingworth's death was announced yesterday, so presumably it was the story immediately before or after.

A mistake is a mistake. These type of mistakes could easily happened to anyone of the journalist.

I see they're pushing the definition of "News at Ten" again tonight (presumably that's just for the website and won't actually use NaT titles, but still - I know the Sky EPG says "ITV News with New Year Bongs")

Interestingly, there was no voiceover - haven't watched ITV News recently, is that a casualty of the resurgence of Covid?

They were using a live shot of Big Ben in the headlines that looked like it was shot on a potato... surely they're not trying to do something over the public mobile networks at a time when the networks are notorious for struggling for capacity?

The picture quality does sometimes fall apart for some reason when doing OBs; it happened quite often when they were at COP last month.
