I'm not sure it's even possible to turn the current studio into a real set given it's used by both ITV National and ITV London. I think the next best thing would be a LED Wall set which would allow them greater flexibility in the virtual studio.

I suspect Lucy’s appearance was unplanned/last minute. I watched the lunchtime update with Faye Barker and often the evening newsreader is name checked and wasn’t today.

What about a return to the newsroom using the atrium again as their backdrop? I did like their 1995-1999 newsroom look. Simple but effective.

I think you mean 'effective for simple people'. Even my Sister knew it wasn't real, and she's the 'bluntest tool in the box'.

The 'atrium view' was no more real than the 'car park of news' or anything else they've used for the last 17 years. They can change the current look with a few weeks of reprogramming.

I don’t get this urgent hunger from some members who seek news programmes are refreshed regularly. The news is not designed to be entertaining, it’s supposed to be informative. If you look at it, yes it’s on several times a day at least every day. But, how long is the studio really on screen for a 30min bulletin? Maybe 5minutes?
It’s time to just accept the news is not there to be flashy, I’d be just as content if it was someone sitting in an empty room with a tv over their shoulder

No you wouldn't.

It's a presentation forum and we're not talking about a refresh for the sake of a refresh, we're talking about the possibility of change after nine years in the context of an upcoming change to their main rival. This has been by far the longest look of the 21st century at least, and probably back to the 80s as well. Often a revamp comes every 4-5 years - this is now heading into it's ninth.

I don't think any of the comments here are asking for anything flashy either - quite the opposite in fact.

Green Screen technology has its limits, the virtual background for one could be made to look a lot more realistic for example.

The 1995-1999 newsroom/atrium view was 100% real set. It was not virtual at all.

I was referring to the 'theatre of news' set with the atrium background, which heralded the 'standing news' joke.

It would be entirely possible for ITV to have two real sets opposite each other for National and London. I mean, both 5 News and The Wright Stuff come from the same studio with real sets. Anything is possible. The problem comes with one-offs like election programmes. Without building a new studio somewhere, there would be no capacity within the current limits. There isn't a spare studio at ITN anymore. For that reason, I think the virtual era is here to stay. It's cheap to run and incredibly flexible. As [mention]bilky asko[/mention] says, the whole look of the surroundings can be changed quickly and therefore accommodates everything from regular bulletins to election programmes, royal obits and anything else you can think of. Plus, ITN's virtual reality set up beats the pants off anything I've ever seen BBC News come up with. They really have put a lot of effort into refining their technology and designs over the years. I think most would be very shocked by how much ITN achieves with a very small but highly creative and dedicated team. The BBC eclipses them many, many times over and still can't come up with anything better.

For what it's worth, I'm also getting a bit fed up of this new fashion to call out everyone longing for changes to be made. I don't think it's unreasonable for TV presentation enthusiasts to want new designs on, you know, a TV presentation forum. As [mention]Brekkie[/mention] rightly points out, you'd have to go back to the News at 545 of 1976 to find the most recent example of ITN presentation being used as long on a continuous basis. That particular look lasted about 12 years, so we're not far off that with the current ITV News branding. In the 1990s and early 2000's, we'd regularly get radical changes every 2-5 years.

Interesting shot I'm not sure I've seen before on NaT, presumably to keep Joel out of shot.

That shot has been used a few times on NAT over the last few years. Always looks very clunky and awkward though - I wish they'd go the whole hog and use a proper OTS graphic instead.

They do occassionally, as do the other bulletins, but rarely more than once a bulletin, if that.
