I wholeheartedly agree! I cannot fathom the criticism that studio has faced over the past few weeks yet have kept my fingers away from the keyboard. It is nothing akin to N6. Bravo. I personally think the studio space Cardiff now has looks fantastic. The other spaces for broadcasting within the building have also looked very impressive on screen (the leader’s debate some months ago was the first time I personally had seen the atrium area being used and it was wonderful).

The BBC now has decided to refit a totally blank canvas in BH. It can start from scratch with a new look, which can then be rolled out to other studios in due course. It’s a mammoth task and there will doubtless be a period of mismatch between programmes. But starting with the national bulletins is quite sensible. It’s not possible to ditch everything over the course of a weekend!!
I can’t wait to see the plans for what they’ve got in mind.
They use that backdrop every week on Andrew Marr.

It really does baffle me why on earth this background is still in use be it on Nick Witchell's Zoom or on Andrew Marr. I mean I can create NBH backgrounds on my own Zoom. :?:

Totally everyone cares about the fact that they still use the N6 backdrop. It's a real issue only for like 27 people from this forum (no offence to anyone, I'm just being sarcastic).
In all seriousness though, it's indeed not that hard to replace the backdrop, it's just that an average viewer doesn't really pay attention to it.
The N6 backdrop was intended to be an interpretation of how the NBH newsroom would look. It wasn't that far off the mark, and is still familiar to people. I suspect that's why they feel comfortable continuing to use it.

Funny thing is, I asked Jim Mann (Lightwell Visualisations) about this at one point around 2012 or 2013 just before the move to NBH was done. When the NBH newsroom was bare and empty and finishing up being built and getting ready to be outfitted. I was starting to see parallels with the then - soon to be - Studio E and the already existing newsroom backgrounds he created for N6 / TC7. And so, I asked him if the backgrounds were done to prepare us for the new studio to come - Studio E - so that when it gets launched we were being prepared for it and he pretty much confirmed it to me. As my guesses were pretty much on the mark of where I was coming from at the time.

It’s a forum, of course people can disagree with me and should, pretty much like I disagree with those scathing Central Square and Wales Today.
And , I’m going to disagree with your description set out above because i feel it’s a little absurd - that's just opinion.
BBC Wales is a different proposition to most news studios in that it needs to be able to be rebranded very quickly for the S4C news. Having more elements as screens and light boxes is understandable.

Have to agree, really one of my least favourite BBC News sets in a while - if you can really call it a set considering it's just some video walls and some poorly positioned furniture. The lack of a rostrum doesn't just give it a 'plonked' vibe but, when combined with the height of the video walls and lack of ceiling piece(s), just contributes to the general cavernous, bare vibe of the set - accentuated by the insistence on sweeping wide shots from a gimmicky ceiling-mounted camera.
The desk itself is quite nice and preferable to the Studio B one it is based on. But the sofa has to be a contender for one of the worst news sofas around and manages to look constantly out of place as people are rarely sitting on it. And in many of the wide shots it looks like its the wrong radius for its position relative to the desk. I know that it has to work for both Wales Today and Newyddion and I know that suggesting a 54D-type solution would be sacrilegious, but it doesn't work in grey.
But most crucially is how poorly lit the set is - not just the newsroom backdrop (which is largely just reflections), but the studio itself is way too dark. While the videowall screens certainly get points for clarity, they are far too bright compared to the people sat or stood in front of them - made worse by the standard Wales Today backdrop being a largely white/light grey newsroom. The lightboxes are also not large enough to inject enough colour into the set to offset the predominantly black set and white backdrop.
Newsroom saying that it is 'nothing akin to N6' is clearly ludicrous. Regardless of your opinions on either set, they are objectively both rectangular sets with fake-newsroom displaying videowalls on three sides, with a lightbox above and below said videowalls. Within news set design, I would say that is fairly similar. I'm not a particular fan of the BARCO era, but I do think that the 2008-13 N6 set was one of the better versions of the design and, accounting for available tech, a better, more cohesive set than the current Wales Today one. A more fitting comparison would be the 2009-12 version of Breakfast in TC7, if you imagine it without the rostrums or ceiling boxes (although their problem was being overlit rather than underlit).
