I see what looks like 4 presenting areas? Desk, cat walk, touchscreen and is it towA or IowA?

I think it's towA - the list furthest on the right seems to be in alphabetical order and it's between scrZ and touch. Also looks like you were right, I notice AR gets a mention in the screen area column - indicating they at least planning an AR screen (probably as per old election night set-up).

From those descriptions I still can't work out if it's a fully new set or just a partially new set. I think only the old soft set is confirmed to have been removed and 'catwalk' is a term I've only seen used around the 2012/3-era sets. Making me suspect that it could be just a rejigging of the 'hard' end, though I am willing to be pleasantly surprised.

Would BBC News aim to go for curved LED walls in Studio B to be a major part of their design. The current screens in B are not really LED quality aren't they?

Well people were saying it would be like the regional studio in Cardiff - and that’s just a box. So flat LED walls.

Don't forget that Studio B is full height with a proper grid, so I would imagine they could make better use of the vertical space than Wales, which looks kinda flat to me.

There was a mix of screen technology in the old set. The three screens behind the desk were barco walls. The catwalk used plasma screens and the ‘soft end’ used a curved LED array with a slightly diffused curved screen in front.

I believe there are also some cheap LCDs? hidden behind the moveable wall in the 'performance' area, though I suppose they are purely for decorative purposes rather than for display.


I'm not particularly enthused about a Wales Today-style set, which is what the info now seems to be suggesting. But if we are going down that route, please let there be rectangular furniture. This whole BBC rebrand is clearly based around squares and I do not want a return to the curved furniture aimlessly plonked in right-angled sets that we had before NBH.

That desk at BBC Wales can be moved wherever they want it to go. I'm sure I read somewhere we've barely seen that studio used to it's full capacity. I would loathe a rectangular or square desk for BBC News. In fact I can't remember a time there ever was one. Arcs have always been the way and certainly look far better on screen than squares or rectangular desks....you only have to look at ITV news or C4 news to realise that. Everything of that kind of shape just looks awkward - to me at least. The amount of guests you can host is limited and the camera work (if we believe what we've been teased then they will be fully automated) will be difficult.

I can confirm that all cameras will be on floor tracks. No manual cameras in the studio.

It's been about 18 months since BBC Wales moved, if you are still holding out for some new and innovative studio use, I suspect you are only going to be let down. We were told for years that they weren't using the Barcos to their full potential...

What you are describing is the vast majority of news studio desks of any shape, they pretty much all look awkward with guests because the way you need to sit to get good camera angles is an entirely unnatural way of holding a conversation. If four people have a conversation at a table, they sit at roughly 90° from each other, not huddled in an arc.

The ITV News desk looks awkward when talking to correspondents because it is too wide, not because it is rectangular. The 2011-12 Newsnight desk was a better orientation of a rectangular desk (and probably the best fitting furniture they ever had in TC7). Channel 4 presenters talking to people on the videowalls look no more awkward that BBC News presenters turning to look at the plasmas.
