So the big question is...
The move to Studio B for the nationals will be permanent to give them a distintive look (like it was before 2008) or will be a temporary move to rebuild studio E?

Considering B is being refitted with automated cameras, I'd be willing to bet this will be permanent - E will still be used on the News Channel (as far as I'm aware) so I don't think it's for maintenance reasons, although I would be happy to be proven wrong. Any change in set design would be welcome after 8 years, in my eyes.

Stuart I'm wondering if the "hoop" in N9 could be the weird ceiling protusion that is shown behind and above Mike Embley in this image from the TV live website:

I wonder why bbc world switched off the lights it was fully lit when bbc news 24 were there with their flags.

It's bugging me I can't find the an image. Does anyone have the infamous Google Maps walk though available anymore? It was either part of the set or some kind of air con unit. Round in shape, with round sides that formed a smaller circle (not much). I'm absolutely not imagining it and it was definitely in N9, NOT N8. And yes it was circular.

Here's a picture I took in N9 during its final 'look'. Don't recall ever seeing what you describe though.



As has already been mentioned, N8 did have some oval ceiling panels which were lit with red gels (from memory).

N9 really ruined towards the end with all that plastic and frosted glass it just didn’t look good, I was kind of glad when they moved to N8.

Chris Cook has just shared an Instagram story of him unplugging the Studio B video wall "forever" "...time for something different"

? Massively intrigued now

Looks like things are already underway then. Excited to see how things will look especially since B is such a big space they’ll literally have a blank canvas i assume.

Correct. 54D is the new permanent home of both programmes.

As above, Marr and Newsnight will remain in 54D.

The whole reason for refitting B is to make staffing it cheaper. It previously requires at least 50% more staff than other studios. Putting in camera tracks and making the lighting plot fixed reduces those costs and makes it the same price to operate as (eg) Studio E.

MY SPECULATION ONLY - The 1/6/10 launch from B will coincide with a relaunched News identity. END PREDICTION.

It'll be interesting to see how the refitted/reconfigured Studio B will work onscreen, especially with election broadcasts now coming from there.

There are local elections next year aren't there? So we'll probably to see how Studio B V2 works in elections mode next Spring

Well the elections may be relocated, although the local elections are not always an indicator of what will happen at the next general election. Personally think E would work better for them as that way they remain in the centre of a newsroom environment. These things evolve all the time anyway so still possible they'll end up back in a full studio for the next general election as well.


As for the network news - I've learnt to accept that it is generally evolution rather than revolution when it comes to BBC News, and frankly I don't think they need to change things too much anyway. The main thing for me is a better standing presentation area - I've always felt the screens in E looked awkward - and those in B, seemingly being removed, were far superior. Ideally the main screen from B would be relocated to E if that was possible.

The original Six o clock news studio lasted for 9 years (1984-1993) unless I’m mistaken (probably am).

I wonder what the thinking is with making the National News come from a separate studio to the News Channel?

Hopefully its not to merge World News and News Channels into a single entity
