Lets hope this is the year Leeds Look North improves and it dosent look like its been filmed with cameras from 2 billions years ago and a background which clearly hasnt been updated for a good while now.

I mean surely, especially with HD coming - upscaling that incredible soft washed out picture which looks like it’s being filmed through a smear of butter would look horrendous.

While the full set videowall is nice and can be used well (though still washed out given the tiny size of studio and no way of stopping lighting spill), I do think a set solely made up of videowalls - especially videowalls so close to the set - look a bit clinical and cold.

I agree - I like a bit of physical ‘set’ which makes it feel a bit more real, rather than a presenter floating in the Matrix.

I’ve also never liked the plain black floor of the current Look North Leeds set. That also makes it feel a bit sparse.

That said, I do think the current set does make good use of a small space.

There was some mention a while back on here that all regions would be getting a new set as part of the HD rollout, so maybe things will change at some point soon if true.

I think the problem is that a Wales Today style set in the regions - especially those with tiny studios in converted office space - would have the same issues Leeds has now.

It might work in Newcastle or Southampton but not in Leeds or Norwich.

By the time that all of the regions finally have sets that resemble what the *current* network news set looks like (as opposed to still be stuck in the "N6 style", all these years after network news moved from TVC to NBH), the network news will probably then change to something noticably different again.

Thus once again rendering various regions' sets as being "the old style" when at least some of them will have not been in situ for very long.

I would be delighted to be proved wrong, but past form leaves me utterly cynical that Auntie Beeb will *ever* maintain studio set design consistency across network and nations & regions news for any notable length of time.

Although this is very much a case of damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I can already see the headlines were the BBC to update all of their regional news sets simultaneously. Certain publications would call for the abolishment of the license fee, stating that the BBC were wasting it on lavish projects and not spending the money on programming.

At the same time, there are a band of people who are stating that the BBC is looking unprofessional because there are slightly different looks in different regional news sets across the country. Unless you're a presentation geek (like most on this forum) the average viewer doesn't really care or notice what the set is behind the presenter reading out the reports from the autocue. All they want to hear/see is their local news from their local area. And that's hard enough to deliver as it is.

When it's license fee money that is being spent, care has to be taken over what that money is spent on. And when a decision is made to update a set or similar, there has to be very clear and determined reasons and justifications for why it should be done.

Since when has the weather forecast for the late news been presented live from the studio in Yorkshire on Look North? I'm sure it used to be a pre recorded job (quite a long day for Paul doing a live forecast at lunchtime, evening then late too!)
