Quote:Neighbours is reportedly being axed after nearly four decades on screen.
The iconic Aussie soap, which started in 1985, will end this August, according to The Sun.
A source told the outlet: ‘The cast and crew in Melbourne haven’t been told about the decision. They will be devastated. Neighbours is an institution people grew up with.’
They added: ‘Channel 5 pay Fremantle Australia many millions of pounds every year and, sadly, there’s a shortfall of about £5million in what it brings back in through advertising.
‘There’s a lot of disbelief and sadness among those who know it’s ending.’
Bosses at Channel 5 are said to have been in talks with Fremantle Australia for weeks to keep the soap on air, but a deal was not reached.
It’s thought that the soap costs too much to film, compared to how much it brings in from advertising.

EDIT 01:50: A statement has been released from Channel 5 reveals they will no longer be airing the show after the summer.
Channel 5 Wrote:Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.
It's been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we'd like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.
We'd also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.
We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.

Title is a bit misleading as it’s not been confirmed.
Changing the slot to 6pm, perhaps was a sign Channel 5 we’re not happy with it. Did the ratings stay about the same?

Yes, I did edit it shortly after
Wouldn't rely on The Metro for such news (or any news really), this has been picked up by The Sun as well. The former is tabloid rag and the latter... yeah lets not go there.
Might want to wait and see if a more reliable source turns up. Digital Spy's picked this up but uses The Sun as its source...
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s correct this time. Channel 5 are clearly moving away from the Aussie soaps and it’s pretty much the UK that has kept Neighbours alive for most of its existence.
I do think we’ve had this story in the last couple of years only for the deal to be renewed not long after. But things seem different now.
Well Metro quote The Sun. Of course nowadays all the tabloid sites do is report each other without additional verification. The headline here is the show "facing the axe" but the story is much more from the perspective of the show looking at ways to avoid the axe.
Ten in Australia have kept it to 4 days a week this year, meaning C5 have took over premiering episodes. One thing I will note is respected Aussie site TV Tonight just did an interview with the controller of Ten but could not get info on Neighbours and they were trying to seek a separate interview regarding it, so certainly think there are question marks. This is far from the first time Neighbours has been rumoured for the axe though - or indeed been axed.

It's certainly making people on Twitter talk.

I think The Sun is normally quite reliable for stories like this...
A shame for everybody on the show of course, but Neighbours has been past it for about 20 years so no big loss IMO. Lets hope C5 put the money into more drama, they have had some really great dramas over the past few years.

As I've said many times in the past, while The Sun is trash and riddled with inaccuracies, its TV news stories do tend to be correct.

Could this not be the opposite though? 6pm could’ve easily been Home & Away with Neighbours losing the evening showing?

This is the same newspaper that writes articles about fans moaning about mistakes in storylines on Emmerdale.
The Sun have now changed their original article to say that it hasn't actually been axed and that there is still a chance it could be saved?
Feels like the sort of story leaked to force a deal.
The Mirror has stuck its oar in with its own article that erroneous claims Neighbours has been on-air since for over 40 years!
Quote:Neighbours 'axed' after 40 years as bosses look to Kylie Minogue to make special return.
Neighbours is set to be axed after 40 years on our screens, with bosses hopeful they can
convince Kylie Minogue to return to the show for a very special ending after four decades.
That would suggest Neighbours would've been on-air since at least 1982, and sharing studios with Prisoner Cell Block H!
Well to be fair to them, a headline saying 40 years looks better than one saying 37 years.
