One thing I didn't realise was that Neighbours does air ad free (but not break free) at 6pm, with C5 concentrating ad spend later in the evening. Suddenly makes sense now why moving Home and Away to 5 Star, where it could air with advertising without taking it from the evening C5 quota, actually works for them - even if they lost half the viewers if they weren't selling ads around it before but are now then that's a bonus. What doesn't make so much sense is moving Neighbours from 5.30pm unless the ad sales were at a level where they believed an extended news bulletin could bring in more ad revenue.

ITV doesn't air ads during the local news either.
The reason 5 News was extended wasn't because they thought it could bring more ad revenue, it was because the 6.30pm was doing very badly and moving it out of primetime meant they could keep their Ofcom news quota but air something that rated higher at 6.30pm like Eggheads.

This really is a nonsense article. There's been more accurate and informed information in this thread than on there.
And in all my decades of being a fan of TV pres and the like I actually don't think I've ever seen ITV2 written as 'ITV Two'.
I could see Neighbours working on ITV2, perhaps as some counter programming to the news on ITV.
Something did cross my mind however... would it perhaps be a more attractive proposal if ITV Studios Australia took over production, to beef up their unit over there?

The chances of Fremantle selling Neighbours are zilch and ITV Studios Australia would get more traction from premium scripted content that could air on Stan or Binge than acquiring an ageing soap.

They’re probably waiting for the adverts to finish on My5 so they can actually sample an episode.
I do think it's legacy means pretty much all the broadcasters will look at it but I do think the reality of the costs and it taking money away from UK produced content means they'll reach the same conclusions as C5.
It's also worth noting Neighbours isn't alone when it comes to UK broadcasters turning away from acquisitions - at one point C5 itself was dubbed CSI5 considering how much US content dominated primetime, though they still have quite a bit through 5USA. ITV though has very little new acquired content now on it's digital channels, whilst C4 has significantly cut back as well. Indeed it is BBC1 and BBC2 who have upped their reliance on US content in the last couple of years with Gossip Girl and Superman on BBC1 and a few series such as Pose in primetime on BBC2.

The BBC need more content for iPlayer hence why they've acquiring things like Pose and Gossip Girl. It's not like US imports are on every day on either BBC One or BBC Two at 9pm.

Trying to think who the last big star which you'd credit Neighbours for making a breakout star in the UK would be. Margot Robbie is possibly the go-to example but I think really most people know her from Hollywood and subsequently found out she used to be in Neighbours. I'm struggling to think of anyone post-Holly Vallance who perhaps people in the UK would know of via Neighbours regardless of whether they watched Neighbours. And compared to Kylie she was famous for about 30 seconds.

It's probably the case because she's based in the UK that Mullins was chosen for the interview rather than any fondness for the character she played.
It used to be that you could appear on TV and have a music career on the side because the size of the markets allowed it. Sad that both have shrunk but thankfully the lack of potential for crossover now means that both mediums do more of what they do best rather than try to please casual followers.
I don’t buy that narrative at all. Both the TV and the music industries are booming, especially the former. I’d suggest that it’s harder to do both because audiences are ever more discerning, and because TV has even more time and money heaped upon it. If anything, the reason we don’t see more cross-discipline careers is because stars are too busy in the industry they’re already in. We don’t get more Sherlock is because Benedict Cumberbatch is sought after for all kinds of film and TV, not because he’s trying to launch a singing career on CD:UK.
