Yeah but they didn't promote it, then dropped it just four days in to accommodate The One Show. No primetime airing at all, just moved onto the next episode. It didn't stand a chance at driving trial after that.
The appetite isn't there from the station or indeed the viewer for it in primetime on the main channel though. 4.30pm is probably the best slot it could hope for at the moment for a later afternoon screening, but C5 are going down another direction with their 4pm slot, which I suspect along with the odd new programme will become home to repeat runs to some of the 6pm shows they've commissioned in the year ahead.
Just very annoying that there's no HD option for 5 Star at all - something the likes of BBC Three, ITV2 and E4 all offer in some shape or form. I imagine the audience for Home & Away generally skews younger, so not only are they precisely the sort of viewer Ben Frow wants shot of but they probably stream the show anyway, that said even then AFAIK My5 isn't HD - so if you can't record the lunchtime episode you're out of luck.
I am very concerned about Channel 5 and their commitment to some overseas programme.
Like most people I have watched all the Aussie Soaps over the years at some point and like most I enjoy them. I still enjoy watching classic episodes of the different ones.
I am saddened at the passing of Neighbours but also annoyed at Channel 5’s attitude.
They started messing around with the schedules for Prisoner, Sons & Daughters and then Home and Away. No need to breaks with Home and Away. They should have caught up and had the break the same time as Australia and been head to head.
They also messed around with the Schedule for Dallas by putting it to a graveyard shift effectively losing the UK Audience.
Now they stop the funding for Neighbours causing the Axe.
They didn’t need to cut the episodes during Lockdown either as it didn’t stop in Australia.
They are my observations and concerns.
I suppose the audience for those is just not there - I mean with all the streaming services pushing out new content on a daily basis, the audience for watching re-runs of 40 year old soaps, whilst not non-existent is hardly going to be a big money spinner and even current soaps are seeing a slow decline due to changing viewing habits and the general banality of the limited recycled characters and storylines they have to play with.
Overseas programmes in general have disappeared from the main FTA commercial channels almost completely - if anything the BBC is plugging that gap now for anything that doesn't go straight to streaming or is tied up in the Sky deals. C4 used to have two or three US dramas every week, as did E4, but now it's just a handful of series a year. ITV2 isn't as reliant on them as they once were and the days of CSI5 are long gone. 5USA still has a solid line up but it's nowhere near as high profile as when C5 were filling at least an hour of primetime a night with US content for three or four nights a week.
Being annoyed with C5 though for withdrawing funding from Neighbours though is ridiculous when it's pretty clear it would have gone a decade ago without them. Indeed C5 are pretty much implying now they've lost money on Neighbours ever since they acquired it - if anything Home and Away has actually been it's saviour as I suspect combined the two are profitable, but individually the high price they paid for Neighbours, which I think was three times more than the BBC valued it at, was ultimately it's undoing.

Home and Away has skewed older for many years. It only gets half the 16-34 audience that Neighbours gets.
Channel 5 has simply moved on from acquisitions and I think the days of paying millions on acquired content you don't own or have a say in are long gone.
I would imagine Cash in the Attic doing 0.3-0.4m at 6pm will be more profitable for Channel 5 than Neighbours and it's the sort of show which can be repeated quite easily.

Wow - so you'd think Ben Frow would be keen to hang onto it? Or is the fact it's imported and was originally a hit on a rival network the issue, making it vulgar somehow?

Well it certainly won't be the latter! Will simply be a case of the overall ratings not being particularly strong in the grand scheme of things and them knowing that their expanded UK slate will rate better and bring in more income whilst keeping H&A going on 5Star.
The narrative that Frow only wants British content is a bit silly considering they highlighted the TV Movies as an important part of their daytime schedule.
The fact of the matter is Neighbours cost Channel 5 a fortune and the cancellation frees up a LOT of money to spend elsewhere, much of which will be on UK commissions.
Yep, Channel 5 were virtually funding Neighbours by themselves, unlike with Home and Away.
