The apparently non sync cut from black to the slide is intriguing, you'd expect the slide scanner to be in sync with the pres mixer which would be in sync with the source of Crossroads.  Possibly an artefact of the home recording we are seeing here.

For the cartoon to have a different fault is bad luck but I guess could be related if the fault was something like an SPG or genlock failing?

(BBC Two had a similar thing a few years ago with an OB programme falling off air and the standby Coast falling to play properly).

Oh yeah that's unfortunate... "Here's a filler programme" "Really sorry, that's not working either!"

It's unlikely to have been networked from Birmingham as ATV used to play Crossroads at 18.05 in 1981 with ATV Today following at 18.30.
Scheduling for Crossroads varied across the regions with some including Southern, HTV and STV screening it as early as 17.20. It was common for the following week's episodes to be played out by ATV on Friday evenings for companies requiring local copies for themselves or to feed a mini-network. I recall Southern used to network Crossroads to HTV in the 17.20 slot at one stage.
Yes, it will have been playing locally, Thames played it at 6:35 then. I don't have the patience to compare the two clips but it looks like the fault was very early in the episode and they played the whole episode again another (the next?) day. Either that or it happened near the end and they made a longer version for the next night, which seems unlikely.

The series was going out at at different times/days across the country but presumably by then everywhere had synced up their episodes as later that year there was the big hotel fire/fireworks night episode. So I wonder how Thames caught up, presumably by replacing something else one evening.

It is an odd one and also must have been something pretty major to know so soon that they definitely wouldn't be going back to it.... unless of course they just knew they didn't have time for it, the next programme being Give Us A Clue which they presumably were playing to the network so couldn't be delayed

The cartoon looks like it was from Telecine rather than VT which is where Crossroads would have been from. Possibly just  went wrong because it was loaded/set up in a rush? I don't know much about telecine, the bit that made the actual video signal presumably would have had to be in sync with the station, but would the film speed have been tied to it too? That's what it looks like it going wrong there

The recording is very poor quality. At first I thought the actual broadcast fault was a frame store sync going bananas.

It might have been a total loss of signal from wherever the VT was being played out from into Thames's pres, that black between the Crossroads going and the slide appearing may have been syncless video.  Not quite long enough to provoke the IBA's blue apology caption at Crystal P to jump in !
Discovered a channel a while ago which seems to be dedicated to meticulously searching for every screw up on BBC News. Very intriguing.

It appears there was less than five minutes left of Crossroads when the breakdown occurred. Thames (or whoever was TXing that episode) did, surprisingly, splice the end of it onto the start of the following episode, which runs a few minutes longer than usual and doesn’t credit a few characters, such as Meg, who only appeared in the first few minutes. They added a superimposed caption and music at the start, resuming partway through the dinner table scene that was interrupted by the breakdown. You can see the “join” (the real start of the second episode) at about 05:52 on the second clip.

Thanks for that, as I say I really didn't have the opportunity to work it out! In the brief snippet of Peter Marshalls announcement on that clip he seems to reference the fact they were catching up

You can see everything start to die here, the picture starts going just as the announcer is telling us there's no sound then bam! Black screen followed by slide. Weather related perhaps?

On another note has anyone else noticed that when Gogglebox on E4 comes out of an ad break the sound starts off a little choppy?
Doesn't look like a satellite link failing to me, and I have seen enough of them, so I doubt it is weather related.
It does look more like something losing lock though, with the sound failing and then the picture jumping.
I am so annoyed about how badly synced that three-way view of the Tory PPB breakdown is that I have just downloaded all three clips to attempt to sort it myself since I am quiet at work.

Having a custom breakdown slide on hand specifically for SU2C is particularly nice attention to detail, I think.

Considering who it is that made it, it's not that bad  Big Grin

Wow, didn't even clock that...

Edit: ten mins in an open source video editor and it’s already better synced than his ever was. No panning options, sadly, for audio… hrm… (OpenShot).

And pres having a selection of SU2C fillers available. Makes you wonder if there was some greater than usual chance that the OB might fall off air.

With regards custom breakdown slides, where I worked we had a 'holding' slide or caption card for every programme that was due to be transmitted that day, the inventory was refreshed every day.

In my day it really was a slide or caption, we put the programme slides in the first set of available physical slots in the machine and put the generic breakdown and apology slides in fixed slots at the end of the carousel, 3 or 4 of them - they never changed day to day so the transmission controllers could go to them straightaway if needed.

Don't recall ever seeing one go to air, I used to show visitors around and say 'when did you actually last see a breakdown apology slide on your telly?' Most would think about it and not be able to come up with an answer. Of course this was in the days of analogue, with today's digital things are so much more reliable. Aren't they.
