In this one shortly after the film goes black there is about a second of static and when the breakdown slide kicks in the announcement is full of static too, almost like the breakdown caused a signal loss?
Looking at this in one of those compilation videos of breakdowns recently, seems this one was a "double trouble" in that they completely lost the film then got it back but it had no sound and it took them a while to realise by the looks of it.
Breakdown from Channel 4 on October 1999; during Beyond Dope Sheet. This one's an interesting one because on that same day people in Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire were having sound issues. Also nice to hear some form of extended ident soundtrack

That ident music was actually released commercially I think. I want to say it was by D*Note.
Edit: Yeah it's called Upstream by D*note and is on Spotify.

That big black bar looks a bit like a bad tape or a faulty machine.

That era of C4 doesn't get as much praise as it deserves, especially the first year of the squares and stripes in 1999 before they tweaked things the following year.

Going by the way the picture has shifted to the right and the colour is all mixed up it looks like some sort of reference/timing issue. Though its a very analogue looking fault at a time when I would have thought they'd be using Digibeta or D5

Yes, the vertical green strip is the PAL subcarrier burst (and should be sh1t colour, not green if you do get to see it, which you shouldn't!) Anyway, the phase is clearly wrong from the active picture content. I'd go for a reference problem with the VTR

"Beyond The Dope Sheet" was a "Magazine programme exploring the latest news from the world of animation, animation on the internet, and a selection of animated films.". Apparently was released in some form on home video in 1999 and there's a bit of information here:

I ripped four episodes of the third season of Dope Sheet, basically the episode of "Dope Sheet" itself would be in a half-hour slot. Then at midnight straight after that program they'd play some of the animations that were featured / mentioned in that specific episode in a brand called "Beyond Dope Sheet", that's why it went into that old film. This slot would last about an hour and 10 minutes and would go into 4Later (Channel 4's late night block from 1998-2001) once that finished.
What a great find, poor Philip Elmore. It would be nice to see how they filled the rest of the time until Give Us A Clue came on. The days when a channel could just fill 5 minutes with a random cartoon!

Crossroads cutting cleanly to black when it fell off air is a bit strange. I wonder if that was networked from ATV or if Thames were playing out a local copy? The apparently non sync cut from black to the slide is intriguing, you'd expect the slide scanner to be in sync with the pres mixer which would be in sync with the source of Crossroads. Possibly an artefact of the home recording we are seeing here.
For the cartoon to have a different fault is bad luck but I guess could be related if the fault was something like an SPG or genlock failing?
(BBC Two had a similar thing a few years ago with an OB programme falling off air and the standby Coast falling to play properly).
