I was wondering how common this was historically, as it fascinated me at the time?
I remember really well a time circa the summer of 1997/1998 when Granada Quay Street suffered a power cut or major issues during a daytime film - so after a few blank screens, jumps in pictures and lots more effects - up appeared a mute YTV!
They had the Calendar News on at lunchtime which eventually got sound - then the YTV announcer apologised to viewers in the Granada Region over the YTV Clock into the ITN Lunchtime News... By 12.55 it was fixed and we were back to Granada continuity!
The only time I remember it happening continuity wise.. wish I slapped a tape in for it! I was just amazed at the time YTV were still using an on screen clock to introduce the news, and it was the chevron branded promos for Bruce's Price is Right also fascinated me at the time!
Re the above problem, was Granada playout/ pres being performed at Leeds, or was that before that era?
When Meridian Southampton were providing HTV West and Anglia playout, there'd sometimes be the wrong programme slide and or announcement (at least on Meridian)

Think it was before the transition to Leeds - Pres was still coming from Manchester until late 1998 - I'm guessing as YTV was the neighbouring region they just went to them due to the issues at Quay Street
Think Granada also provided a sustain weekend service for Border as well at one point? As I vaguely remember a joint weekend service with Border and Grampian too - must be around 1997/1998 before the move to Leeds?

I think Granada slowly took over Border's playout until it was 24/7? Possibly when they purchrsed Border's TV division from Capital Radio?
If Granada was coming from Leeds at the time surely a power failure in Manchester wouldn't have been an issue? They would just have continued as usual until at least the regional news

Pretty certain the Granada Pres when I saw it was still based in Manchester.. the daytime film had finished and it was around 12.20 when the regional news come on before ITN.. as far as I know Granada were one of the last to move to YTV Pres
I distinctly remember in the Carlton era Central were unable to get on-air from Gas St. I believe that that time the Midlands was simply fed Carlton London output so to the average viewer, it wouldn't have appeared that different. I think it might have even been discussed on the blue place at the time; CITV had a bit of a convoluted route to air, possibly via a Sat Truck at the back of the studios?

I remember this very well, I was watching a repeat of I Love The Seventies* on BBC2 when it fell off the air, while my parents were in the other room watching the film Red Corner on BBC1, which was a premiere. They came in the room to ask, as people often do in these occasions, "is that us or them?" and after a flick around the other channels revealed it was just the Beeb, I whacked a tape on to record the BBC2 breakdown. It was off air for about twenty minutes on analogue, though I know digital terrestrial was off for about an hour.
* I'd already seen this series when it was first broadcast the previous year, and I'd also seen the compilation they did at Christmas, so this was the third time I'd seen some of this episode, but I watched all the repeats again anyway. You had to get your archive kicks where you could find them in those days.

It wasn't as celebrated as the huge power cut almost exactly a year earlier - when BBC1 was more or less being broadcast directly from Belgium for several hours - or indeed the one a few years later which badly affected BBC News for almost a week, mostly because it was half past nine on a Saturday night so it didn't really affect any live programmes. But they were very lucky that the Wimbledon coverage had ended an hour or so beforehand, or there'd have been uproar.

I remember BBC2 continued I Love 1975 and then dropped God, The Devil and Bob (a very controversial series at the time in the US, broadcast on the Beeb to no response whatsoever) to get back on track. I see from Genome that Red Corner wasn't shown again for another eighteen months despite the enormous breakdown during it, you may have thought they'd arrange another showing fairly sharpish, but I suppose the gap was no different to when they'd show a film around the news.
Actually I remember one example of a programme being shown again quite soon after its original broadcast because of a breakdown was this documentary -

I remember people complaining to Points of View and the Radio Times about this, it was quite a serious and moving documentary and there were continual issues with sound and picture - I remember in response the Beeb said they had to stop it and move the tape to another machine - which were considered to have ruined the programme, and so they arranged a swift repeat as an apology.
