This year they introduced a new corporate identity, doing away with the metalic and 3D tones which are often related to their presentation. After Hans Donner retired as chief staff designer, new art directors Alexandre Arrabal and Fábio Figuereido began transiting the brand's DNA into a much flatter and cleaner design and a color palette associated to the rainbow gradients used in the Globo brand. The new corporate identity, as part of a corporate reorganisation which merged all of Globo's TV and digital propierties under a same roof, also meant custom typefaces, doing away with the VAG Rounded and Futura typefaces.

But Donner is not out yet, it seems. Last year, he posted a teaser image of a redesigned 3D logo for TV Globo on Instagram, though it's still unknown whether or not it will be fully unveiled, as the primary 3D logo from 2015 is still currently used on-air.

Although the corporate side, as well as their digital assets, have switched to the new brand DNA, the TV channels have been sluggish. The first to change brands was the Telecine network, which dropped its 1997 Gédéon logo into a much more corporate design. Now, the SporTV network (originally Top Sport) is changing their brand. As part of the celebration of their 30th anniversary, as well as that of Globosat (now known as Canais Globo), the channel is dropping their 1996 logo (most recently modified in 2011 by Troika and flattened in 2018 by Beeld Motion, a boutique Brazilian studio which works mostly for the Globo pay-TV division) with a totally new lowercase and muted logo, with a new emphasis on digital-first. The changes premiere Wednesday.

I think that's likely been scrapped.
Staying in Brazil, the Loading channel, which was owned by magazine publisher Spring and warehousing stationary store chain Kalunga, has closed as of today. Since May, after Kalunga sold its participation on the JV to Spring, the channel entered into administration and ended all of its original programming, laying off all its presenters and personnel. After the channel launched last December, it wanted to differentiate itself from other entertainment channels, by focusing on a very popular niche, and a programming focus on anime, esport, K-pop and geek pop culture; however, it became marred by heavy controversies, including firing its esport team two days after launch because of the decision of its news programme, Metagaming, to focus on investigative journalism instead of straightforward esport news, and botched work conditions, including reports of unsigned contracts, burnout and poor conditions, including the use of obsolete technology. Although advertising and revenue increased, Kalunga departed the venture in late May as it entered administration, resulting on the layoffs. Spring, in the need to find replacement programming, began talks with Jovem Pan to transfer the operation and have a FTA outlet for their then-upcoming TV Jovem Pan News, but the plans fell through, as a São Paulo judge ordered the cancellation of the license because of irregularities between the transaction to Spring/Kalunga from Abril, the former owner of the license, and known for the operation of MTV Brazil. As a result, Loading stood with repeats of its anime programming during that time and a sort of news programme called De Olho no Mundo, produced by the Brazilian office of AFP. After the closure, the channel was taken over by Ideal TV (once again), broadcasting non-stop religious programming from the World Church of the Power of God.

I’ve never heard of this channel, but I love the graphic based animations using the three dots, quick, clever, entertaining and with many variations. I’m not so keen on the asmr clips going into films. The logo and the way that it animates is also pleasant to look at.
Reading the history of Loading, it sort of shocks me. Funnily enough, Loading isn't the first geek-focused channel to suddenly lay off all it's staff, as recently VENN, what was supposed to be gaming's answer to MTV laid off half of it's employees, including a show called FaceCheck. Luckily, FaceCheck now runs on their rival, the more successful G4.

Back to Loading though, I read that when they fired most of the eSports reporters because they weren't reporting on what they wanted to hear, despite positive news being what they were reporting on rather than dark and scary stories probably scaring the advertisers. And there's even a quote here that shows how shockingly bad the management was:

Quote:On the same day, an article published by the website Splash found that Loading had not yet signed a contract with the dismissed professionals and with others who were still at the TV station. The company tried to sign the contracts in a hurry, so that the termination would be made official in the sequence, but the staff refused. Because of this, the professionals had not yet received transportation vouchers, meal vouchers and health insurance. Internally, the TV station justifies itself by saying that it is a "startup still in its first steps" and that it did not want to "beat partners".[12] Similar statements were also collected in The Esports Observer article, where they reported difficulties in producing material with old equipment that were still the same used by MTV Brasil, "with technology from 20 years ago and not relying even on basic software for TV production". The text claims that due to this pressure, employees even cried before the first Metagaming went live.

Quite shocking. I'm glad G4TV is doing OK, viewership wise, and their management are actually treating people like decent human beings. But R.I.P Loading.
UNIFE, Argentina, 2021. This small DTT channel broadcasting in selected cities in Argentina and Chile is a diginet owned by Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, and operating as a local subsidiary of RecordTV. It began after the IURD leased the broadcasting slot in the Buenos Aires region of a former Argentinian news channel, CN23, initially as a timeshare, but eventually gaining the slot all day long after the closure of the former, with original programming, RecordTV telenovelas, some films and IURD televangelists filling the bulk of the schedule.

Initially trying to imitate the brand of market leader Telefe, even during the name, they received this week a brand new look, coinciding with the transfer of operation to RecordTV, and launching a Chilean feed after leasing subchannels from the TV operation of regional broadcaster Marcelo Mendizábal Terrazas, Arcatel, owner of local channels in Antofagasta and Santiago. The new look clearly aligns with the overall brand of RecordTV, even though the logo is quite different.

Well, aside from the controversies relating to Loading's single year of broadcasting as I don't really see the point of Ideal TV coming back to occupy the spot of a defunct channel again.

Honestly, with a competent management team, I feel like Loading could've worked as a pay television channel and serving as the Brazilian equivalent to Toonami and G4 in order to continue broadcasting in another form, similar to how MTV Brazil continued after transferring their over-the-air frequencies to Grupo Abril eight years ago but sadly, it just didn't happen thanks to this mess.

Heck, the person who made the second comment for this video - https://youtu.be/ZJZ51FSQ_54 - isn't happy about the return of Ideal TV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJZ51FSQ...pGt4AaABAg
Back to Greece for the ERT Christmas idents (1000% better than last year)

These idents premiered today at 06:00 along with seasonal break bumpers and an ERT advent calendar promo.

Always surprised to see Christmas presentation this early in Greece as the graphics will be used right until the evening of Jan 6th.

Back to this. Today, during a break on their 9pm telenovela, they unveiled their annual Christmas image promo, with a new remix of their legendary Um novo tempo jingle. Alongside the launch of the promo, Globo has finally, after many delays, launched their new corporate identity in the TV network. The rebrand, which will be fully implemented in the New Year, will retain the codes already used in the institutional communication, marking a departure on the metallic and 3D look used by Globo through the years. Additionally, the last version of the 3D globe designed by Hans Donner will coexist with the new corporate logo in a transitional basis before it is completely ditched in favour of both the corporate logo and the tvglobo wordmark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RabAoa2sSi4

On screen, a specially-designed 3D logo will grace promos and idents, doing away with the metallic look and making the 3D logo plain matte white, with backgrounds changing depending on content and programming genres. The new look also places a larger emphasis on the heritage and status of the brand itself, including its legendary Plim-Plim sound device.

Programming will also switch to flatter and cleaner graphics and titles, all sitting within the new graphical style of the station, already employed for the intros of many programmes and strands. All programming strands which also use modified versions of the main station IDs are also being adapted to the new style; for example, the Futebol 20xx strand, which englobes all of Globo's rights to the local football leagues, including the Brasileirão (both 1st and 2nd Division) and many of the regional state leagues, broadcast in a regional basis (but all still englobed under the common brand); and their Plantão da Globo special report intro, dropping the same opening title style used since 1991 and which evolved with each brand transformation (no word if the legendary music from João Nabuco will be remixed, dropped and/or retained as it is). All elements are designed, as usual, in-house, under the supervision of art directors Ricardo Moyano (the successor of Donner as chief art director), Alexandre Arrabal (art director for their news and sports divisions) and Fábio Figuereido (chief set designer).

Coincidentally, after leaving TV Globo in 2015 in an amicable decision, Hans Donner is now working as an interior design consultant for a luxury real estate developer in Goiânia, together with a local architect's office. That's all can I say, but, certainly, Donner would be happy to see the brand evolve without compromising the basics of the brand.

I am really surprised how the ERT brand identity has positively evolved over these two years, doing away with the tacky graphics used after the corporation was revived. Although last year's idents were really bland, the more recent idents show how the new identity can be applied in any form without compromising the overall brand style. Even with their financial crisis in recent years, they now have a coherent identity and ready to compete with all commercial broadcasters.

Might I say, this all looks beautiful. I even see a callback to the first colored screen logo of Rede Globo.
Over these few hours, more new elements from the rebrand have been revealed to viewers. Last night, during the 9pm telenovela, Jornal da Globo and Conversa com Bial, we got a first glimpse of the new copyright slide, which is, essentially the same, but with a much smoother animation and reflecting the new graphics package. Additionally, there are two versions: a full overlayed version and one with a gradient background in the final frame.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk-pAiQ9FyI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkcBIDx7-UY

The Plim-Plim idents, used as break bumpers during imported programming as an equivalent to the “Estamos apresentando/Voltamos a apresentar” bumpers during original programming, have been also replaced, using a new and more contemporary sound design, but retaining the iconic sound device. There are various versions of these Plim-Plim idents, all reflecting the new 3D logo variations: pink/orange for entertainment, blue/cyan for news and prime time, green/lime for sports and red/orange for lifestyle and specials.

Although reception in the industry is positive, in social media it is not. Viewers have compared the new look to that of its rival SBT, specifically, targeting the new logo style. However, others have defended the new look as doing away with the quite dated branding style used by Hans Donner, and putting the channel in a par with Globo’s cable channels (which used to be Globosat). In my honest opinion, that’s what to do when evolving the brand of a long established channel without compromising the heritage of it. It’s fresh, it’s new, it reflects current trends and appeals to a younger generation of viewers, without alienating older viewers and without losing the spirit of the network. That’s something that the BBC failed to deliver in their rebranding.

I don't think we should fault the BBC. TV Globo's rebrand is, in my opinion, a lot similar to the BBC. Both use gradients, both use evolutions to an already existing/iconic design or principle, and both are slowly implementing the new look, with an aim to be finished sometime in 2022. Both were also criticized by social media (and defended at the same time), and both can appeal to both younger audiences. I don't consider the BBC's rebrand a failure, just a slow rebrand in a time where we expect things to appear quickly. Besides, we have been waiting for an on-screen refresh to the TV Globo logo since October 2020. We should just calm down and let these rebrands take place, since it will be the face of the companies for the foreseeable future.
