I was in the Co-Op today and my ears pricked up when I heard an advert on the instore radio talking about some product the Co-Op had on offer and to my surprise it was voiced by a certain ITV announcer known for his frequent gaffes on air (Views from Storm Front guy).

To my shock, the advert voice over was read in a calm, well pronounced and well delivered pace, which got me thinking, why all the issues with continuity announcements, i.e. frequent mistakes, read a breakneck speed, and several mis-pronunciations etc?

Has anyone else heard this instore at the Co-Op?

Any other continuity announcers doing voiceovers/randomly appearing when you least expected them?

I remember Maggie Mash from YTV doing the GCSE French listening exams when I was in school back in the mid 00s.

It doesn't surprise me, as a lot of announcers are freelance. Continuity is a different set of skills from doing a promo/advertising voiceover - i.e. you have to write your script, time it, and if you're doing it live there's of course extra pressure. Whereas in a promo or advert, the script is most likely written for you and there's a guide voiceover dictating where the voiceover needs to be. Someone could be great at promos but not optimal at continuity (although he does seem to have improved a bit).

There must be a fair few examples from over the years of continuity announcers appearing elsewhere. I remember Andy Siddell often used to do his drivetime show on Magic 828 in Leeds, and then leg it next door to do the evening CA shift on YTV.

Plus of course there was LWT's Glenn Thompsett's No Wet Wonderfoam infomercial. :lol:

I distinctly remember doing some audio-based exam at school which was played on a cassette tape and as soon as it started I recognised the voice as being the nasally female Granada continuity announcer. I remember being very shocked that anyone did anything other than one job, I was still years away from knowing what a freelancer was!
