Hopefully Only Connect stays on BBC2. Moving it to BBC1 may see it being dumbed down. They have tried House of Games and added live music and audience participation rounds which are both garbage.

The issue with House of Games Night is that the format doesn't really work weekly. My idea for a House of Games spin-off would be just have members of the public compete over a week. Sort of the reverse of having celebrity editions of gameshows

Well given with each passing series the number of recognisable players each week is decreasing we're nearly there.

It might be better as a weekly hour long show with different contestants each week but I'd say a week at Christmas in between Xmas and New Year would be best or maybe their Champions editions airing in the few weeks The One Show is off air.

Ultimately though I think the stripped back nature of the daytime version is what makes it work so adding seemingly unnecessary elements to it risks alienating fans, though I suspect it exists more as a promotional vehicle for the BBC2 show than to attract viewers in it's own right.

Were the contestant's on the Price is Right pre-picked on Brucie's version or were they all totally chosen at random once sat down? After reading some contestant experiences about the American version, they say they pick you to "come on down" while they were queuing outside.

The American version is pre-selected, believe it has been for a while.
Considering the Bruce Forsyth version was a complete transplant save for the regional differences, probably safe to assume relatively interesting/outgoing people (and those who wanted to come on down - apparently somebody refused in the early days!) based on their applications, pooled and chosen from the said pool, otherwise you'd probably end up with some dull uninspiring muppet who would be jammy enough to win everything but the kitchen sink.

Of course gameshows weren't always after people who jumped about like morons every time they won £20. Some shows seemed to specialise in some right miserable sods as contestants. Most contestants on Bullseye looked like they didn't want to be there, only looking happy once they'd won the speedboat...

If they were pre selected it didn't always quite work out!

There was an older woman on today's repeat on Challenge who won Contestant Row...you could win THIS BRAND NEW TOP OF THE RANGE CAR!

She ended up telling Bruce she didn't drive, and the game was the dice one where you had to roll 5 cars - she instantly took the first cash sum instead of carrying on and that was that! Slightly awkward but Bruce made the best of a bad situation by carrying on with a proveout!

Huh? What's a proveout? :?

I imagine selecting gameshow contestants must have been a laborious process in the pre internet days likewise for even applying to get the show.

That happens all the time, the same thing happened in the Crowther years. Apparently. I've seen it on a few other shows as well, somebody wins a car and it turns out they can't drive.

Information is only as good as the applicants who give it out, wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot of "creative licence" applied to get on shows like that. Or maybe they didn't ask, as production doesn't need to know whether you drive or not (unless there was a driving game of course).

I would imagine that made for entertaining telly with an old school host like Bruce who could banter his way through it and get laughs about it? That's all production really care about at the end of the day
