Rai News 24 is (finally) being aligned with the rest of the Rai TV brands. The channel is debuting a new brand identity and studio as its competitors (Sky TG24 and TGCOM24) are beefing up their programming and visual style. The new set was designed by none other than Renzo Piano, in collaboration with interior designers Massimo Alvisi and Junko Kirimoto, under the concept of a laboratory of news, with the design resembling a high-tech conventional workspace, with lots of 4K screens and many technological upgrades. The change to new graphics will see the channel’s logo finally change to the style implemented in 2016/2017 and developed by Italian/Argentinian designer Eloisa Iturbe and her motion design studio, which is already used in the Rai News and RaiPlay websites, as well as in some of the channel’s magazine programmes. However, the channel’s new graphics will remain separate from the visual style of the rest of Rai’s channels. The changes will debut after Easter.

It's an interesting design. My immediate reaction is that it all feels rather 'bare bones'. But stylistically, it also recalls much older generations of news sets with simple desks and plain walls -- updated for the 21st century with lots of screens rather than inset graphics.

In any event, social distancing doesn't seem like it'll be a problem!

Wow, that's a lot of plants, could give the BBC's Morning Live a run for their money. Way too much green for my liking and probably broadcasters here; where straying away from warm colours like red, orange and yellow can result in complaints (remember BBC Breakfast's blue backdrop with clouds in 2006, and the first Daybreak look?)

Also too many colours here, and the astons need aligning.

Yep, next week. And it is also changing format, with Ryan Bridge and Melissa Chan-Green as new presenters, with Bernadine Oliver-Kerby reading news and sports and William Wairua as roving weatherman. The format is also going to become much closer to that of Breakfast (even if they are doing much more hard news after John Campbell began presenting). And the name is now simply AM. The show is also doing away with the talk and opinionated elements and increasing the number of entertainment and lifestyle segments.

It is also dropping the simulcast element: even if the radio division was separated from the TV division due to Discovery’s takeover of Three, Mediaworks Radio still used Newshub resources for its news and talk programming; this is no longer the case now, as MW is building its own news service for its new Today FM brand, using resources from RNZ and poaching people from Newshub, including political editor Tova O’Brien and former AM Show presenter Duncan Garner (that’s why Ryan Bridge took over as temporary presenter). Just for context, but this does not belong to our forum remit and so I do end this off-topic purposefully.

In my opinion, it's kinda interesting. Really sells the idea of being serious, as if it's saying: This is a news channel, not a Russian news channel.

That's really nice. Both distinctive and inviting. I'm not a huge fan of AR-augmented sets, but the way they've chosen to fill out the background in the wide shots works quite well here. Even though it looks like there's a camera that's been partly cut off in the opening shot shown in that clip!

The desk, while a clever design, feels disproportionately large. And I imagine it might prove to be a problem with shorter presenters (the height doesn't immediately appear to be adjustable)!
