That table is a strange piece of furniture. It seems translucent but somehow isn't...

In some shots it almost seems like the anchors have no lower body. Anybody else get that feeling?

In some shots it almost seems like the anchors have no lower body. Anybody else get that feeling?

I think it looks vile, myself. The old look was much better. Nova's news is generally pretty rubbish anyway - very tabloidy.

Nova has been very brash and tabloidy content-wise since its inception. Original owner Vladimir Zelezny wanted to differentiate them from the staid Czech Television by introducing visually-intensive content and buzz-generating shows, such as a late-night NSFW weather report. Most of this brash style was influenced by the design and visual strategy from visual artist Petr Vrana and composer Jan Hammer (of Miami Vice fame). In contrast, rival Prima has been more traditional, and even if they have introduced more tabloidy shows in recent years, it has largely stuck to a more conventional visual style compared to Nova (which even has taken a more traditional direction after the launch of digital television in 2007, including typefaces by Marek Pistora).

The history of Czech TV post-Communism could probably make an interesting thread in itself, I reckon. Indeed, that Nova clip linked to above is from the day that the channel effectively split into two - the owner, Zelezny*, broke away from the channel's original financial backers and effectively started up a whole new channel from the Barrandov studios in Prague. For a couple of weeks, there were two versions of TV Nova broadcast - Zelezny's new operation on terrestrial transmitters and (I think) most cable networks (presumably it would have been his company that held the transmission contracts), and the original TV Nova on some smaller cable networks - oh, and a big screen in Wenceslas Square, in the centre of Prague... Eventually the latter operation folded.

*(Incidentally, his son Jakub is one of the lead news anchors on the public channel Česka televize)
