BBC Two generally airs the highlight shows for major events whether it's a royal wedding or Remembrance Day each year

The highlight of a major event is usually on BBC Two in prime time.

Yes, that sounds right. Just my first thought was going back to 1997, and the tribute programmes were on BBC One. Guessing that was to do with reflecting the mood at the time, and if so again, having it on Two is the right decision.

Interesting to hear about his experience of finding out the news & getting into the studio. Arriving at 12:50 and getting on air for 1pm is incredibly tight for TV? I presume if he hadn't of made it, they already had someone in the building ready to do the News at One?

(I usually watch ITV News, so am not even aware of who regularly presents BBC's One & Six programmes.. but isn't Huw usually around from early evening?)

it is by no means unusual for the EBU to be used as the distribution platform for a major event, especially given it's a member broadcaster who's producing it.

They're also facilitating standup positions (including camera and operator, clean feed, and uplink) in prime locations, which is more efficient and cost effective than every broadcaster doing it themselves.

And it's all of this that gets the country that bye to the final of the Song Contest - the BBC being one of the biggest contributors to the wifer Eurovision network.

As an aside, it is somewhat gratifying to learn that Huw Edwards dislikes standing up to present the news! Good on you, Huw!

Huw is not embellishing those times for the article! Martine was still in the studio had he not been ready, but as he was in the building this seemed unlikely. Usually the Ten presenter, when it’s someone different to the Six presenter, is in the building during the afternoon.

Interesting how Huw writes the following sentence in Andrew Neil-chaired The Spectator:

As well as Eurovison, it’ll also be distributed by the main news agencies - Reuters and Associated Press.

As thegeek rightly points out, Eurovision are distributing it, not ‘broadcasting’ it as such. I haven’t seen whether it’s on one of their three normal news feeds or an event one. Either way it’ll come with extra restrictions on usage compared to a typical news event.

That's not strictly speaking how it works. The BBC (and the others in the big five) are major financial contributors to the EBU, though a quick browse of their website doesn't show whether it's their EBU membership fee or the ESC participation fee that gets them their bye.

Are we expecting the Family ident to come back into use tomorrow? I assume they won't introduce the funeral using Oneness?

Seems that many countries around Europe are going to broadcast the funeral tomorrow afternoon, both public and private broadcasters will do, the only exception seems to be Ireland. As of right now there are no Irish TV and Radio channels that broadcast it. I presume this is also because RTE received raised a lot of eyebrows back in 2018 wneh they aired Harry and Meghan's wedding
