As the studios question comes up every few months, I thought I'd make a summary table for the main news bulletins, Newsnight and the two news channels - including temporary changes of longer than 4 weeks.



Let me know if there are any errors, I know [mention]itsrobert[/mention] is a much better authority than me for earlier eras.

That was the smaller bulletins desk situated opposite the larger flagship The World Today desk. When BBC World moved into N9 in 1998 they swapped things round a bit compared to the original News 24 orientation. The bulletin desk was where the News 24 main desk had been and the TWT desk was where the News 24 second set had been.

With regard to the N9 stuffs. Pilfered from the TV Live website. Here is that hot seat that Adrian Finighan sat on through the years:

BBC NEWS 24: FLAG ERA
Here is a close enough shot with its initial occupant, the newly launched BBC News 24. Picture a different desk and Adrian next to Alastiar's left.


BBC WORLD: FLAG ERA
After BBC News 24 moved out into N8. In came BBC World and that initial flags era. Here is Louise Minchin sat in exactly the same seat as Adrian but with a different camera angle used.


BBC WORLD: CREAM & RED ERA
Zip forward and you have Mike Embley sat where Adrian was in the second iteration of desk in this shot with Martine Dennis.

Now around 2003 or 2004 when BBC World updated their set to match that what had already had been done in N8 had a different but radical overhaul. Included in World's iteration of the set are mirrors to make the space seem rather larger than it was. Quite clever if you ask me. Here in said hot seat is Mike Bushell, plus you can tell by that protruding ceiling.


But all that hot seat-ing ness wasn't to be as of April 2008 as BBC News 24 - renamed as BBC News Channel - moved from N8 into a newly refurbed N6 closely resembling TC7 freeing up N8 for BBC World - renamed as BBC World News - to move in and give a major update to that studio (N8).

N9 wouldn't be left alone though as it was mothballed and only used for local election coverage to my knowledge. I don't know if it were ever used as a spare studio because the newsroom that was in the background looked rather empty and forlorn when used for said election coverage, how one amazing studio and newsroom came down in such a sad way.

Hope this somewhat lengthy run through N9 - 1997 through to 2008 - is decent enough and other may be able to fill in any blanks.

A BBC World special from April 2002, presented by the inimitable Stephen Cole, featuring as its centrepiece a live interview with tech entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth... from space! He was the world's second space tourist, and first person from Africa to go into space.

Stephen was my favorite BBC World presenter. Such a shame he left.

I liked Stephen, too. Allegedly he wasn’t the nicest of people off screen, which might be why he left. He presents a weekly talk show, The Agenda, on CGTN now.

In the never-ending quest for the first signs of BBC World's 2000 rebrand. Is this the closest clip on YouTube from [mention]Rob[/mention]'s very own TV Live Channel? Overnight with BBC News 24 and BBC World in June of 2000.

A very rare full edition of the One O'Clock News from the late virtual era has been posted on YouTube today:

Quite interesting to see the coming up sequence at about 18 minutes into the video. The One didn't employ a coming up sequence initially and this was only introduced in 1996. They just used the opening music again to serve as a coming up vamp, followed by a short stab. Interesting that they didn't just use the closing vamp which would have seemed a bit more sensible. I guess the opening music does build up quite dramatically to add pace to the coming up sequence, though. Still nothing beats the Six halfways vamp for drama, though!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, but I absolutely love this era of BBC News, it was confident, authoritative and important. They also had the melodies from previous themes at each bulletin time with them. Still it's a pity that this set and theme tunes have a very poor reputation at the BBC. I think it's the best they've ever had

Found an amazing little nugget from the very early days of the BBC website - a BBC World schedule from April 1997. This is shortly after the launch of HARDtalk and the short-lived 'iridescent' flag look.

The 1993 and 1995 eras are the only eras I'm now missing in terms of a full daily schedule.
