I can't blame them for it being a bit bland - as I understand it, the BBC shoe-horned in an extra episode without much time or budget, so they did what they could.

The best part of the episode was the next episode trailer, yeah.

Now I've had the time to watch it, I will say this: It wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be. Maybe that's me settling for mediocrity, but yeah. Wasn't offended by the episode. The Sea Devils were faithful to how they looked in the 70's, uncanny CGI on the faces notwithstanding. I will give the show credit for setting it in an interesting period of time, but then they get points off for not doing anything with the historical characters. They're just there. A half point as well for having archive Sea Devil screams from their first serial. I did notice that, and I did like it.
The big thing, that the media really tried to push to get viewers to change the channel and watch it, was the 'Will they, won't they' of Thasmin. And the seeming conclusion of that leaves the proponents and opponents of such a thing both equally disappointed. I am of the latter camp, because I always have been of the opinion that the Doctor being Asexual, and not wanting to involve themself in romance is one of the most progressive things the show can do. Being Asexual and Aromantic is a totally valid option for people. RTD, Moffatt, and Chibnall all tried to add romance for the doctor, which I don't like. Oh well, one more episode before its over. 2.20 overnight ratings. An all time low for the programme as far as live viewing goes.
The episode was fairly decent, but lacked substance with the historical characters and you could tell corners were cut in the editing. The Doctor and Yaz's relationship barely built up to anything substantial and the pay-off was not just an expected one, but painfully tedious. I did enjoy the Sea Devils though, Chibs even on his worst day is really good at the classic villains.

I've often thought about how I would run Doctor Who. It is actually one of my greatest fantasies to be the showrunner of Doctor Who, because I am a huge fan of the show. I am also a cocky so and so that thinks he can do better than the current crop of producers. I feel like the show has fallen behind the times of late, in terms of presentation, and what stories it makes. It all has become a bit samey. If I had a stab at running Doctor Who, I'd want to make a completely new show out of all the elements, in the way that RTD did in 2005. Same show, but completely different feel and outlook:
The Show I would have would focus on The Doctor, and characterise them as follows: A centuries old, often martyred, never boring, alien who goes where they need to go, in a dusty blue box. Sometimes with friends, sometimes alone, but always to go where they are needed. My Doctor would be that, and they would go back to the old testament of Doctors who would shoot guns, beat up henchmen, be an anarchist (because The Doctor is an anarchist), and support science, rational thought, and choice. They pick companions that either emobdy one of those feelings, or have potential to do more with their lives. That's why The Doctor bumps heads with The Daleks, who want the whole universe to be subjugated under their rule. The Cybermen, who consider themselves the final evolution of sentient species, and wish to enforce this need to ensure their survival, entropy be damned. The Silurians/Sea Devils, who cannot accept change, and want to justify genocide, because their worls was taken. And of course, The Master. A Timelord who has everything The Doctor has, but squanders it all with an obsession of personal glory and power. For me, Doctor Who needs to be distilled back to its purest form. Doctor Who has no canon, and that should be the defining rule of the show. Nothing is set in stone. In fact, that's what I would do for the last season wide story arc. Have it all revealed that The Timelords have never been dead, that every retcon is because they have altered time so much, and use that as a jump board to reset things: The return of the guardians, the war lords, and every other ancient race that Timelords have killed off (because they have, they're techno gods) Eejit Shall Speak Eejiocy Onto Eejit

One thing that really stood out to me as particularly bad in this episode was the CGI/special effects - they seemed *incredibly* poor, even by Who standards.

Yeah, the next episode is in October, for the BBC centenary. Jodie's Doctor regenerates at the end of it, and then the next episode after that is next year. Speculation is that it'll be November, not January (i.e. no holiday special), but that doesn't make any sense as you'd be waiting over a year for the 14th Doctor's first full episode after their debut.

I got a feeling this will be a hard reset. If so the BBC probably want some time between the old and new.

It was already confirmed in the press release announcing the return of RTD that his first episode back (and presumably that of the 14th Doctor) will be the 60th anniversary in November 2023... which means a gap of 13 months after the BBC Centenary Special
