I'm glad they kept the Saturday show's format the way it was, just under the new branding. (Funfact: they put the Saturday show on Paramount Plus, while the weekday show is not. ) I still think moving to Times Square, and the rebranding was really unnecessary when they had good format and studio going already.

I liked how they did the history of CBS Saturday Morning shows (and mentioning the kids shows too) T
The new music feels like they have a core idea in mind, but execution is poor — needs more refinement. I do miss the original 2012 look. High-paced but clean, minimal, friendly and welcoming, in contrast to how bombastic GMA and Today are.

Music also progressively got better IMO, throughout the years even though the graphics became more obnoxious.

Goodness you compare the old CBS This Morning look (particularly that 2016 one) to the CBS Mornings now and it's night and day. The 2016 look fits perfectly together, looks very modern and is pacy and seems to have a proper hard news focus and look whereas 2021 seems much more similar in tone to GMA & Today.

One issue CBS News does seem to have (as an outsider) both on This Morning and their Evening News is that there's no stability. It always seems like there's somebody high up looking to make their mark so there's a new look or presenters being changes. Viewers like familiarity so if you just change things up all the time rather than attracting new viewers you alienate existing ones.
Even in the last decadr alone - on Evening News you've had Scott Pelley be unceremoniously dropped despite doing a strong job and then Jeff Glor be relegated to Saturday mornings. I think it speaks a lot to Jeff's professionalism that he handled it in good grace and has remained on Saturday Mornings with no fuss. CBS always seem to think the anchor is the issue for some reason and it's fair to sau Norah O'Donnell has had little effect on the programme.

And This Morning/CBS Morning seems like a revolving door. For a show only on for nine years the likes of Charlie Rose, John Dickerson, Erica Hill, Norah O'Donnell, Bianna Golodryga and Anthony Mason had all been and gone in the anchor chair. No stability so no wonder viewers don't stick around.
If you think the lack of stability is the reason for CBS News' low ratings, consider that the CBS Evening News was very consistent. Dan Rather anchored for 24 years. And yet they were in third place for most of that time.

Consistency is great but what you really need is a team that clicks with viewers. Familiarity just isn't enough.

That’s true but constantly chopping & changing isn’t it either. That’s not to say sticking with one of the teams would’ve worked but constantly changing things up screams a network that isn’t sure what it wants to be.Give formats and people a chance to bed in amd treat them with respect. The way both Scott Pelley and Jeff Glor were treated was pretty horrid.

1980s and early 1990s were the decades that CBS News had experienced peak "golden years". Despite Walter Cronkite's departure in 1981, Dan Rather did manage the CBS Evening News rating in first or second place at the first 12 years of his tenure as anchor.
Dan Rather's ratings are quite a bit more nuanced. After he took over from Walter Cronkite, the ratings for the CBS Evening News dropped 2.5 ratings points, and they ended 1981 behind ABC World News Tonight. Rather recovered somewhat and took over the top spot again the next year. The CBS Evening News had dropped to second place by 1989 and to third place by 1995.

Here's the source for that: https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/c...y-network/

The point is: I tend to think that it would have been better for CBS if they had replaced Rather in the mid tot late '90s.
I like what I've seen of CBS Mornings but I do wonder whether, even in a country as big as the US, there's enough of an audience for three fairly similar network morning shows.

CBS's morning ratings aren't a total embarrassment, but they're quite a bit lower than ABC and NBC - whose rival offerings have almost 50 and 70 years of heritage respectively. Plus, in many markets, there's competition from Fox and sometimes CW or independent stations with local news - not to mention the various cable morning shows which have their own USPs.

If they're happy with 2.4 million viewers then fair enough. But it's hard to see them breaking out of third place with a standard morning show unless Today or GMA really mess up.

There was a period were CBS allowed affiliates to have their morning newscasts replace parts or all of their morning shows. WWL in New Orelans never aired the First CBS This Morning, The Early Show, the early days of CBS This Morning 2. They had a a high rated morning newscast that was local. CBS in their recent contract made stations carry the morning show on time 7-9am, and it actually hurt WWL's ratings in the morning.https://www.nola.com/entertainment_life/...b1d7d.html (The newscast airs on WWL's sister channel from 4:30-9am,while WWL airs it 4:30-7, the sister station aired CBS' morning shows) In Salt Lake City the station aired CBS Morning show from 8-10am , with live local news at 7am. In Hawaii, currently, KGMB airs a morning newscast at 7am and CBS Mornings 8-10am ,which by the time Hawaii gets any of the network shows they are already hours old.

While, I think it would make sense of CBS to just hand over the slots and let local stations made extended AM newscasts, even with third place the show makes them money and morning shows are the most important network slot now, so I don't see that happening.
What sort of share do Fox and others get with their local rivals?

I'm really struggling to find much to like in this new look. It feels like they've turned what something which managed to be high brow but quite fresh and accessible into something that feels stuffy and dated, and it is largely thanks to the packaging.

Here's from WGN (Indie) Chicago from the last big ratings period in May ,the'ir morning newscast the 7-9am hours were first, followed by Today, GMA, FOX 32 Good Day, and CBS This Morning (WBBM is a low rated CBS owned station in Chicago in general)

I wish I could find more , but alot of newspapers stopped doing reports about ratings, and many times stations like WGN up there, do it , but unlike WGN, they don't mention other stations.
I like the Saturday Mornings music better than the regular music. Does a much better job of balancing the heritage value, which I assume they wanted to include, and something that sounds more modern.

I also don't get if this rebrand is about bringing them together why they felt the need to change the weekday version to "Mornings" whilst at the weekend it is "Morning", so "CBS This Morning" arguably sits better alongside "CBS Saturday Morning" and "CBS Sunday Morning" than "CBS Mornings".

I completely agree. In terms of consistency with Saturday and Sunday, it works less well than what they had before - and they've ditched the closest thing they had to a heritage brand in the process.

They must have really felt that the CBS This Morning brand was bad news. Maybe that's what their audience research was telling them.
As you may notice in some of the clips since CBS Mornings premiered, the CBS Eye logo has moved to the left & in a smaller size. I don't know about you, but noticed as CBS had a Special Report this morning showing President Biden's UN speech, they had that bug. I feel they should for news programming outside of mornings, kept the old CBS bug on the right or be like ABC & NBC, having custom news-specific bugs, to look more professional considering the circumstances & also it looks better with the news graphics (sans Mornings) remaining the same.
