So Huw hasn't announced he's leaving but has announced he is thinking about it, isn't happy with how the whole salary reporting situation has been handled and thinks viewers are probably due a replacement.

For me, it’s already decided that Huw will leave. And his recent change of Twitter account could be another (albeit tenuous) link.

Very interesting and very honest, wouldn't really expect anything less from such a decent man.
I'd fully expect the lead position to go to Sophie Raworth and shared with Clive Myrie and certainly wouldn't grumble if Mishal made the move back to television.

I've just never warmed to Sophie at all and think she'd be a rather weak replacement IMO - she'd be quite a way down the pecking order for me, but is undoubtedly his number two in the eyes of the BBC at the moment.
If he does go I expect him to remain at the BBC rather than go elsewhere in a Dimbleby style role which he has been gravitating towards in recent years anyway, covering the elections, royal and parliamentary events and probably still involved with the biggest news stories, with perhaps a smaller regular role - perhaps a semi-regular interview show in the style of what they were planning for Andrew Neil.
I’d quite like to see an outsider parachuted in. Piers Morgan is still out of work isn’t he?
Wonder how likely it is Huw gets a direct replacement if/when he leaves, given the One and Six haven't had clearly-defined main presenters for some time. Sophie, Reeta, Clive and Fiona all appear frequently, and presenters like Jane Hill and Kate Silverton are hardly unfamiliar to BBC 1 viewers. I could even see someone like Victoria Derbyshire making appearances in the future.
It feels like the days of having a 'lead' presenter are behind us, and it wouldn't surprise me if Huw and the BBC agree to reduce his contracted days/hours going forward.

I'd agree with this. Tbh I'm not hugely surprised at his hint of leaving the Ten soon - he's only been presenting the Ten part-time for the last few years anyway, doing 2 or 3 nights maximum a week. The days of Huw doing Monday - Thursday and Fiona/Sophie on Fridays ended a long time ago.
I also can't see him leaving the BBC entirely. He's obviously filled Dimbleby's shoes in being the go to presenter big news stories, as we saw with him being rushed in to present coverage in the initial few hours of Prince Philip's death, and Huw is obviously now (finally) the BBC's main election coverage anchor.
Also in the last 10-15 years Huw has done extensive work for BBC Wales - he made 'The Story of Wales' documentary series in 2012 and presented a weekly Welsh politics show until 2016 before it was replaced due to cuts. I can see him doing more of this, either for BBC Wales or on a UK level, as you said, maybe an Andrew Neil style political interview show as well.
After almost 20 years of getting home at midnight/1am, why wouldn't you want a change? I'll be sad to see Huw step down but I'm sure he'll still be on screens in some way or another.

I don’t see it as a shock - he has been doing it for eighteen years, that’s five years longer than Sir Trev’s original stint on News at Ten/Ten Thirty.
I don’t think he’s really become well known as
the Ten O’Clock News host (no, not News at Ten, that will always be ITN) until the last few years. He was definitely well known - but as one of a group of BBC faces. Now that he’s taking over Dimbleby’s role as presenter of ceremonial occasions, I think he’s become more well known as the face of the Ten.
Not a fan to be honest so glad of this news.
Jane Hill should 100% get the gig. She’s the best the BBC has.
I think he's been clearly the best known BBC News face since Buerk and Sissons were pushed out, and thinking beyond BBC1 certainly unparalleled on TV at least once Paxman retired. In terms of profile he pretty much single handedly carries BBC News IMO - the gulf between him and the rest of the team is significantly wider than between the top team at ITV News IMO.
House made a good point though about how perhaps the days of a fixed rota are coming to an end at the BBC, but for me that would be a mistake. For me though there is no better opportunity than now to have a 1999 style revamp where you might parachute relatively unknown faces into the flagship bulletins as frankly at the moment all three suffer from not having a fixed host for the majority of the week. Indeed with Huw's comments about it being time for fresh blood and us knowing a possible revamp of the look of BBC News is on the cards when the new logo comes in this autumn perhaps those conversations are happening.
Such a shame, he's such an authoritative news man. Can't imagine who can replace him, in the same way.
