I agree with the comments about Clive Myrie taking over the 10 o'clock news once Huw steps down, but I can see Huw still staying to present and continuing with being the main election presenter and presenting big royal and political occasions and news stories in the future.
I wonder if Emily Maitlis would do it.

Yes, it's 31 episodes a year with likely 4 or 5 recorded a day, so could all be done over two weeks, with no more than an extra week to record the 10 celebrity episodes.

As for Huw - I was wondering about the Marr slot as well. Should he look beyond the BBC other than the obligatory mention of GMB (and if he really does want to move on that isn't the worst move he could make) the other big gig opening up is leading C4 News. Although they've got capable presenters in the wings who've arguably been groomed to take over from Jon Snow for years that wouldn't stop channel chiefs parachuting in a name to grab a bit more attention. I can't really imagine him doing it, but it would make things interesting.

Given there's not really a proper News At 1 or News At 6 presenter these days (you'll see certain presenters on the bulletins more often than not but it's not officially their bulletin) there's no guarantee there'll necessarily be an official successor to Huw on News At 10 when he does depart.
Some suggestions here seem rather left-field. Martine Croxall or Ben Boulos are highly, highly unlikely going to be plucked from News Channel bulletins to be the BBC's lead national bulletin presenter (I know Martine has done some Saturday bulletins but even that to News At 10 is a big leap).
There's such a large pool of network bulletin presenters that you have to imagine Huw's successor will come from one of that pool. If Fiona continues with Question Time that probably reduces her chances (plus she's been doing bulletins just as long as Huw so maybe may also be keen for a new challenge). Mishal Husain would probably have to leave the Today programme too were she offered the News At 10 role. I wouldn't be shocked if the role ends up shared between Sophie, Clive & Reeta as between them they all have expertise on the main news brief of royal news, politics and international news.
Reeta Chakrabarti is presenting the News at Ten now, she is someone I never thought about, so would be a solid choice in my books.
Clive has just been given Mastermind so might be seen as favouritism if he gets it.
They have plenty of good, experienced on screen talent on network news:- Sophie, Clive, Reeta, Fiona. Then they have the likes of Jane, Ben, Kate, Victoria, Martine, Mishal. I’m sure they will cope.

I think it takes a bit longer to film Mastermind than 2-3 weeks. I imagine it's the equivalent of a few weeks but spread over a couple of months.

Hardly. Dermot and Natasha were equals on Breakfast. Darren was deputy to Anna on the One. George and Sophie were equals on the Six so it's only Fiona was was a deputy to a man.

Now
that's an interesting idea. I can't really see it myself (not least because Krishnan Guru-Murthy has seemingly been groomed for that role for 20-odd years!) but it certainly is food for thought. What I
could see is Huw going to C4 to do an interview programme and/or documentaries/events. Or there's always 5 News - especially if their planned overhaul comes to fruition... :evil:
Going back to the Beeb - I don't think they will bother appointing an official successor if Huw does go - I expect they will just carry on with rotating presenters as they have done with the other bulletins. To be honest, I'm not convinced they'd have the capacity to employ a presenter just to do the Ten four nights a week anymore. Much easier (and more cost-effective!) to have presenters doing bits of everything, I'd have thought.
