Editorially, there was plenty of justification for extended coverage last night. The late bulletins really should have been extended to provide the level of coverage this story really deserved. I had a listen to Radio Devon last night to see what they were reporting and there was very little they could say because there was nothing to say. And being the BBC they aren't going to be repeating what Dave4557322 on Twitter is 'reporting'.*
It is a big story and would have deserved more coverage last night but there just wouldn't have been the content to do it. Now that all the details are being released they've a lot more to go on
Extending the Spotlight 10:30 bulletin would be pointless, bit only would they have to fill with nothing but also it would presumably take resources away from the more important radio coverage - Radio Devon stayed on air after 10.
As for tonight there's no One Show, it's an episode of Who Do You Think You Are.... so not as easy

BBC Radio Devon are always on air after 10pm, as they produce the show that goes out on Cornwall, Guernsey & Jersey at that time.
As far as developments go, there was nothing until about 9.15pm, when Devon & Cornwall Police released their first statement. After that, developments in the story came at a fairly rapid pace until after midnight, when Devon & Cornwall Police released that there had been 6 fatalities. BBC Radio Devon could have easily shared resources with the TV operation, they work out of the same building. Then developments began again just after 7am this morning.
Editorially, resource wise, they had the resources there to do an extended late bulletin. I just don't think there is the internal political will in the BBC to do such coverage. What made it worse is that the BBC News Channel effectively went off air at 11pm, relaying BBC World News. BBC News Channel should have done an 11pm bulletin, and focused on that story, but Sky News had way better coverage last night.

Oh yeah, that's normal in these situations. I was following developments as were being reported by the Plymouth Herald on their Plymouth Live website, and yes, social media was rife with rumour, speculation and just plain inaccurate information last night. But that's part of the territory when it comes to breaking news.

Presumably that won't be going out in the east? When they've done special bulletins in the past such as the recent G7 summit, the other sub-opt has had a standard bulletin.

Not last night, the shared programme didn't go out in Devon, and possibly not in Cornwall either. The presenter who'd been on Devon since 6pm stayed on. Presumably the South West regional came from one studio in Plymouth and the Devon/Cornwall programme in the other.

So as I said for 10:30 there was barely anything to say, the rough details from the first statement from police and then nothing till after midnight. There was a reporter nearby but again that was it, with the police operation ongoing and the area cordoned off they wouldn't have had much of any pictures. That's really not enough to justify a longer bulletin.

No because they were probably being stretched as it was, without suddenly adding the demand of filling another 10 or 20 minutes of TV airtime - especially when there was little content. Bearijg in mind that it sounded like they were doing two radio programmes and also supplying newsgathering effort to network too.

Which is why the TV and radio news last night had nothing to go on. Even this morning Radio Devon weren't saying a lot of details and kept stressing that they weren't going to say anything until it had been officially confirmed.
BBC Sounds isn't helpful either. The network late show is recorded from the home station, so the SW regional programme which the schedule links to is last night's special local Radio Devon programme.

I listened live on BBC Sounds and the Devon late show was listed as the presenter of the SW late show. The Devon presenter mentioned she was on Devon and Cornwall.
When I got up this morning it was still selected in the app and flicking through it sounded like Devon took the SW programme from midnight
