This week's Creamguide has just come out and has a big feature on the tenth anniversary today of Top of the Pops repeats on BBC Four.
It has reminded me to start this thread, about a recent episode shown (1/11/1990). I hadn't watched the repeats for a while as I've found the music a bit boring recently, but I was struck at how high quality the picture was for the Robert Palmer & UB40 video - it's film presumably edited on video, but the film transfer looks really high quality for the time? Or is it just me?

This tweet says that the Story of 1992 has already been commissioned, possibly before the official decision to make BBC4 an archive channel was made? Though maybe they'll still keep on making programmes like this that don't cost too much to make and supplement the archive content.

I have not got a clue who that poster is or why they should know, I'm afraid. But it's worth pointing out that the annual plan says they will phase out "a high volume of lower cost programmes on BBC Four", but nowhere does it say they're stopping them completely.
The schedules on the BBC website are listing the first 2 episodes of 1991 on the 21st May, but strangely no sign of the Story Of/Big Hits 1991, even though we know the former was filmed last year.

Perhaps now BBC Four is an "archive channel", Story of/Big Hits might air on BBC2 instead? Repeats of the other years regularly air on there.
Even if it does air on BBC2, it's clearly not going to be airing before the first episodes of 1991, or it would be in the schedules.
Story of 91 apparently did appear on a preliminary Digiguide schedule a few weeks ago, before the Duke died. So no reason to doubt that it's still coming soon.. not the end of the world if it's slightly late.
It would make sense to put it on BBC Two anyway since they've been rating so well there. They should probably avoid Saturday 22nd as it's the Eurovision final.
Nothing sinister about that then. It probably got pre-empted when other programmes were delayed due to the Duke's death, so it's understandable if it airs a few weeks later than it should usually have.

'Story of' and 'Big Hits' are archive.
'Archive' doesn't mean just showing whole programmes, BBC Four has always been archive heavy with programmes like Timeshift
Tonight's video-heavy second show (only one new performance, the other two repeated from two weeks previously) is the last we see featuring that set of captions.

The way they handled the Grease Megamix was a bit bizarre, they cut out of Greased Lightning and You're The One That I Want portions from the middle, so we only saw the Summer Nights parts that bookend it. So not really seeing a megamix at all, just Summer Nights with part of the middle cut out.

Same could be said of the Black Box 'Total Mix', where only the 'Everybody Everybody' part played.
With the number of medleys across both editions, it felt like the summer of '81 all over again. Only one more Top 40 hit before Jive Bunny disappear down that hole for good...
The only song to stand out for me featuring on Friday was Seal's 'Crazy', unlocking the door to 1991 in two weeks time.

You've got to love a show that played two megamixes across the two episodes and faded them both out after only one song in each. Actually I noticed someone on Twitter suggesting Everybody Everybody wasn't actually on The Total Mix and that was just the video for Everybody Everybody.
Bruno was dreadful on the second episode, I know Anthea gets a slagging but I think Bruno is probably the worst current host in terms of phoning it in, referring to Vanilla Ice as a band and to "F Williams" in the Top 40.
Well, technically they didn't fade out the Grease megamix after one song, as that both begins and ends with Summer Nights, they just edited out the two songs in the middle. You did still only hear one of the songs in the megamix though.

That was how the BBC credited him* during the entire chart run of 'Gonna Make You Sweat', only changing to 'Freedom Williams' (as he'd been on the sleeve on 'Sweat') on 'Here We Go'.
(I used to think F. Williams was the female vocalist, until learning the was the fantastic Martha Wash - and it was actually the male rapper.)
