Does anyone know what on earth crisp biscuits are anyway? ????

Though interestingly they've left the 50fps conversion on some bits where it shouldn't be (the opening sequence, the top 10, the breakers and the George Michael/Elton John video), though they did turn it off the Michael Jackson and Queen videos (though several shots in the Queen video should have it).

I did like Steve Anderson's "are we still on air?" face at the end. Actually I thought Anderson seemed quite likeable, he wasn't very slick but he seemed to be enjoying himself.

I suppose in those days the technology was improving at a huge rate but it takes some time to get used to it, we have all those snazzy Quantel effects going in and out of the inserts but that means when you say goodnight you have to wait a few seconds for the credits to spin around onto the screen.

By the time we get to Ric Blaxill's era the technology has improved still further, John Peel talked about his appearance in 1995 and how the big change since he'd last done it was that he was required to start his links staring at the wall before the camera swooped in over his head and then shot off again the second he finished (he said it reminded him very much of telling off his kids and felt like shouting "and you can tidy your bedroom as well!" at it when it disappeared). Whereas at this point you're presumably still reliant on the cameramen physically finding you.

I’d lost interest in ToTP by the time of Year Zero, so although I was aware of it, I’d never actually seen it.

From the few I’ve seen so far, it’s….errr….it’s….umm….

It’s actually not that bad!

None of the Year Zero presenters we've seen yet have come across as being unlikeable people... just that their presenting skills aren't particularly up to scratch apart from maybe Mark Franklin.

Yes there were some clever visual effects on it, but I imagine when the tape landed on the desk of the producer in Elstree there was a groan at the length of it, and the fact much of it wasn't the song.

Speaking of the visual effects in the Black or White video, what was ground-breaking in 1991 is now used by government agencies 30 years later. By chance I was watching the Wales.v Belarus match on S4C tonight before ploughing the current batch of Year Zero TOTPs.

Re: the video for "Black or White" ... pretty much everything that happened in the video after the song has finished is basically self indulgent pointlessness with MJ dancing and grabbing his crotch!

The video could have easily finished with a fade out after the changing faces sequences and the pan out shot of the film studio.

It's also never answered what happens to George Wendt after he crashes in the African desert in his armchair. Does he ever make it back to Cheers?

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that Fearne Cotton has now left the show after 18 years to pursue new projects and won't be coming back for this year's Christmas special, about time too.

Steve Anderson was one of the better ones. I agree that Mark Franklin is the best of the bunch, he's resists shouting which is rare in this era.

Once they get the crane in the studio with the camera at the top and the controls at the bottom it becomes a lot slicker. I love the way Blaxill's shows are almost one continuous thing. Chris Cowey arrives and that side it totally lost in his cut and paste vision of the performances. Bu that is a moan for a few years time! lol

So question is who do you bring in as presenter now. Am assuming Clara will remain of course but maybe a good time to revamp the format a bit with it only been twice a year with maybe a proper Christmas show with the return of the chart rundown and a few exclusives if possible. Then have the new year special concentrating on the chart of the year or possibly even a viewers vote.

I would think Gregg James would be the obvious choice of new presenter but if they wanted to go a different path away from BBC Radio presenters then Lauren Layfield would be a good outside choice or if they decide to keep it as Radio 1 then Katie Thistleton wouldn’t be a bad choice either.
This is of course providing they keep top of the pops this year and don’t try to quietly axe altogether again like last year.

Looks like BBC Four may be aiming to get back on track with the scheduling, as Christmas 1984 is currently scheduled for 3rd December, so I'm guessing they may be showing a few other Christmas episodes, before starting 1992 in January.

I'm hoping we will go back to two full years in 2022. Will get the Year Zero era wrapped up nicely.
