My memory of that is that the first few trails went out the 'The Wizard' theme but as it got closer to the transmission date the trail was updated to include the correct theme. I may be wrong and the memory could be cheating on me, especially as I haven't seen the later version.
The trail is voiced by Mark Goodier not Mark Franklin
My first thought would be that they wanted to save the reveal of the new theme until it actually aired.
I do have a strong memory of the night of the 2003 revamp, driving home with my dad and someone on the radio saying "Here's the old theme tune [plays '98 theme] and here's the new one… well actually, we're not allowed to play it before the show starts!"
These pre-song interviews are pointless so far. They're about 10 seconds long so you get one insubstantial answer or a straight up plug.

There's no question that time and effort were spent in crafting it, and in shooting it on camera and keying it into the title sequence... but, seriously, who thought it would be a great idea to use serif letters of greatly varying heights and widths? And did they not think at any point that the thing wouldn't be easy to read, regardless of where it was used and what angle it was viewed at?
It's a design classic IMO - much better than what came before. For me it's the logo I most strongly associate with it, and I know most will disagree but I think it's much more creative, and hence better, than what came later in the decade.

She was apparently pretty unhappy when she was let go after only two episodes, so to see her seemingly talking positively about the show - even if she has never seen either of her eps since they were made - suggests that, to some extent, she has let bygones be bygones.

One thing that can be said, the picture quality looked a lot better than it had on previous episodes- presumably brand new cameras installed for TOTP. They certainly weren't using the 20+ year old EMI2001s that EastEnders were using in that studio until a few months earlier.
Mark and Tony are going round on Twitter replying to the people insulting them, I bet they're shocked when they get replies from them ?
Admittedly they're not the first, Nicky Campbell did the same!

Snippets of the 'new' 'All-New' TOTP theme were used in trails broadcast in the preceding week: five-second spots with the words "[relevant artist] (the one I recall is Beyoncé) live in your living room", and ending with the reveal of the new 'warp' logo.
A red flag to some of us in hindsight...
It's also disapointing that they're still using a Cypher, but just using the same template and animation all the time, after we've had so much time to see what the cypher can actually do and how creative the people designing the animations could be.

Another thing I noticed is during the top 10 on the 3rd October show, they used a clip from one of the studio performances of Insanity, rather than a clip from the video for some reason. They did have a clip of the video on the following edition though.
The top 10 really doesn't work without a voiceover at all, though it didn't last long. Not sure exactly when it came back, but I've seen an edition from November with a voiceover. Doesn't really work revealing the number 1 at the beginning of the show either(even if that it how it was before 1980), but we have to wait the best part of a year until it's back at the end.
The 'Insanity' promo video wasn't available/finished that first week.
'The Chart Show' had a band photo, with a snippet of the chorus, the Saturday after (5-10-1991) on both the Top Ten...:

Oh, maybe they played a snippet and said "that's all we can play" then? Definitely something like that. No idea why since I wasn't really a huge TOTP watcher, but I do have strong memories (well apart from that one clearly) of the night of the 2003 revamp and what I was doing.
Back to '91, did anyone else notice the subtly different ending to the opening theme tune over the two programmes?
