I do know that the 1987 Xmas special was recorded on Xmas week with the Top 40 chart being seen as announced on Sunday 20th December.

I think if it had a slight format change and had the actual Christmas chart rundown with maybe a bit of live lounge covers on the Christmas program maybe with some new up and coming acts it could work better. Then leave the new year special for the chart of the year and the biggest songs of the year with a look at future releases that could work a lot better.

With it not been mentioned though I do wonder if it will actually be on as it one of the few things I would watch on Christmas Day and another blow to music programs on TV as they is no music programs at all on BBC one elsewhere over Christmas either.

The Chrsitmas and New Years shows have been recorded in early December in recent years so it would be virtually impossible to do this unless they recorded a lot closer to the big day. Plus this year the Christmas chart won't be out until 24th.

It looks like Radio 1 won’t be airing it until the 25th this year.

It looks like Radio 1 are not airing the chart on Friday 24th December but are waiting till Saturday 25th December.

The 1998 and 2002 Christmas specials are being repeated over the Christmas period. At least that assumes Kate Thornton, Jamie Theakston, Jane Middlemess, Lisa Snowdon and Richard Blackwood should be fine on BBC4... if the regular editions ever get that far.

Wow - the Mail was right.

(Just to clarify, the Mail reported on this development well before anyone else did - even though the corresponding article seems to be more about Fearne's mental health journey than her time presenting TOTP.)

I am well aware that I'm running the risk of sending this thread completely off-topic, and I apologise in advance, but I feel that I have to say this: I am someone who simply does not readily trust the tabloids, and the Mail, Express and Sun in particular (though even I have to admit that the Mail's puzzle section is darn good). I have always been far more of a broadsheet person - and that includes the Times and the Telegraph, before anyone thinks I'm a loony leftie.

I say all this with absolutely no disrespect intended towards BBCMeridian, or anyone who *is* loyal to the tabloids and those three in particular. And I would never, ever consider trying to make these individuals change their loyalties, because they are absolutely entitled to them.

Once again, I just felt that I had to get all this off my chest. And once more, I apologise in advance if I'm completely derailing this thread.

I will say that it probably *is* about time that Fearne moved on, given that she's long since moved from Radio 1 to Radio 2 and she's now old enough to be the mother of the teens that the Christmas and New Year shows target these days (no ageism intended, of course).

She departs as comfortably TOTP's most experienced female presenter in terms of appearances (131, by my reckoning), and third-most experienced presenter overall (behind only the white-haired Yorkshireman on 279 and Tony Blackburn on 148). And it'll be a long time, if at all, before her record of seventeen consecutive Christmas shows is broken (this year's show will be Clara Amfo's fifth in succession, and - again with no ageism intended - she isn't far off 40 herself).

By my reckoning, Jordan North will be the 242nd person to present TOTP - Popscene lists Noel Fielding, Claudia Winkleman and David Tennant as numbers 238, 239 and 240 respectively, on the Comic Relief special of 2009 (the most recent non-Christmas/New Year show), which makes Clara number 241.
