Sky News: 2021 Refresh

Real question. Is there some UK flight restriction that makes the pilot continually circle the scene rather than hover. It gives me a headache or dizzy. Ive only noticed that in the UK. In Japan, Canada, Australia and US their news choppers sit still over a scene for a bit then it moves, then it stops again. In the UK it seems they constantly are swirling and circling. Its not like you can still hear on the ground just because its circling, I just wonder if its an actual UK flight regulations mandate and not just a noise thing for the people on the ground. Let me know if you know for sure.

Hmmm well I dont know about that one. They actually arent that low to the ground. And depending on the optical lens zoom they dont have to be that close, they can be miles away. Maybe they have older cameras and equipment on those choppers. BUt again its seems that the choppers are always moving in circular patterns for everystory. It is because they are trrying to stay connected to a transmitter or relay tower? I dont know? Just guessing.

Thanks Mouseboy. I'm fully aware of how they generally fly. I was also a special constable for a time and flew in a police helicopter and know that they do have to fly low on occasion, especially if they're close to an airport or a restricted flight zone.

Cool! How did that go? Maybe you can give us some more insight. Because if blowing the smoke is the case, they must have been in a highly restricted area . GOod to know we have a chopper pilot that can answer questions on here.

The new LIVE shots they have settled down a bit and they are miles away and higher up from the emergency services helicopter which just passed underneath them live on air. This is typically what you seen in the US the media choppers will fly at a higher altitude than the emergency services choppers which are usually lower down to the ground.

These images are devastating and scary for the residents but it goes to show how dangerous the conditions are and that people need to be careful about starting fires.

A lot of that information is operationally sensitive and this forum is certainly not the place to discuss that I'm afraid so I'm not going to divulge.

I think most people can see the current shots are some distance away.

Do you know how low media choppers are allow to fly?
Interesting that this type of information and The UK Skyway code is published online and readily available to the public to read. The new SkyCopter shots were right over the top of the scenes in some places. They are getting better as they day goes on.
